Default First time @ OBX ????

I will be staying in the southern shores area from 8/19 to 8/27. What kind of fish will be around? Just any general fishing info you can provide like bait type, availability of bait, ocean or bay fishing, piers. This is my first time going to OBX so the info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Fish first light 5:30-8 and last light 6-8:30. Throw small metal and or stingsilvers. Small bluefish and spansh mackerel will be what you get if you're lucky. Small bucktails with squid in the wash may get a some little flounder.

When you get bored with that, and you will, throw on a chunk of dead fish, mullett or bunker, and throw it out there for a BIG 100 lb Bull Nose Ray. He'll run 100 yds of line off and then sit on the bottom. Then break him off because you'll never get him in. The 100 yd run is all the fun you get

Then drink some beer.

Good synopsis, Mike....

Only thing ya missed (and am not sure on this way up at Southern Shores, and in the Currituck Sound) is try fishing on the backside with small jigs and curly tails for speckled trout and small bluefish, maybe a stray flounder.....

Or go crabbing.......

Default Check first

I'm pretty sure that everything on the southern shore side of the bridge down is considered freshwater and a license is required.

Steve, I've read and enjoyed all of your OBX stories over the last 2 or 3 years. Thanks. I know you catch fish back there but I never can find deep enough water on the backside to catch anything. I remember you sending me a PM a year or two ago telling me where to go in Avon but I never quite found it last year.

We're staying in hatteras village again this year so I doubt I'll get up to Avon too often. I'll drive down to hatteras inlet at 5:30 a.m. in the morning. I do well there with blues and spanish at first light then they disappear.

I have been using google earth to find deep spots in sound, just got back from 2 weeks in Avon/Salvo & it worked well.
If you put in area you want to fish & zoom in the dark areas are the deeper waters.
