Default Maritime Skiff - Questions

I am looking into this line of boats - either the 16 or 18 footers. This would be for fishing my local waters in portland maine. I want something easy to trailer that will fish skinny water. If I can get near some rougher water and manuver safely that would be great too (the rocky coast of Maine has some good striper spots but they are dangerous in a boat).

I am not looking for something to stray far from home in. No offshore trips.

I want to hear any expereinces/advice/feedback from SOL'ers along with how much I should expect to pay for a new or used maritime skiff.

I have done enough homework that this boat would suit me very well in terms of fuel costs, fly casting comfort, etc but if anyone suggests a different manufacturer please let me know. But please don't suggest any parkers or Jones Brothers....I love them but they are out of my range $$$.

PS this would be my first boat.

Thanks all...

Maritimes are nice boats and was actually one of my choices when I was looking into mine. I actually went with the McKee craft 16' waypoint. there is a pic in here of it under fishing machines I think. Whatever you get, try to put the most horsepower on the back as you can afford and or boat can handle. I chose mine because I felt the fit and finish was a little better and I liked the open casting deck.

I am torn between the mckee and maratime for my next boat. I have had my 17 whaler since 1982. After seeing the 20p at a boat show I started researching the maratimes and have heard nothing but praise about the 1890 that you are looking at. I havent been able to find a used 20p anywhere in the united states. I have been monitoring all the used boat websites for 6 weeks. That in itself should tell you something. The guys that have them wont part with them!!!

One thing that I can say that with my Mckee with its modified cathedral hull you do get hull slap, but when I am trolling with the electric at joppa, and a big party boat passes close, I get hardly any roll. I didnt buy my boat for blasts out of the mouth of the merrimac, I got it for in shore rivers, and lakes.

I considered going with the 16, and after a discussion with Paul H @ Maritime Skiff, I decided to go with the 189. He said that the the 18 weighs a little more and runs much better with equal hp. I am very happy with mine and the 70 suzi. I suppose if I were to do it again, I would consider a 90, but the MS is sensitive to weigh in the rear, and I suspect that a 90 4strk would be too heavy.
I can't help you with price as I bought mine a few years ago. Ryder's cove on the cape may have some leftovers from last year. See you on the water.

I too am a Maritime owner. 1890 with a 70hp Suzuki. Alot of room, not a lot of storage. The four stroke in not bad on fuel and a pretty dry boat believe it or not. They are pricey, but as you know it's a tough boat to find used. My Second season and still loving it.

I called one dealer about their 20 Defiant. With a 90, they quoted me $32k. I almost fainted. That is a lot of money for that size of boat. Are they that high everywhere?

Maritime Boats are expensive! I love mine. They seem to hold there value. Try to find an 1890 used.

Test ran the 2090 before I bought my cat. I was really dissapointed in the ride of maritime. That was when the prices were still reasonable too. They are wayyyy over priced for what you get. I would look the direction of Maycraft if you want a quality boat at a reasonable price. There are alot of better boats out there for better prices.... Good luck on your hunt

Buddy of mine ran a Maritime 1890 before moving to a Jones Brothers. I agree with the guys that say they pound in a relatively light chop. On the up side, it was fairly dry and didn't require alot of horsepower.

Maritimes are not low priced, so take some time and shop around. Boat shows last winter had 18' Maritimes and 18' Parkers at about the same $$$.

Take a look at the Carolina Skiffs line...very solid design and great reuptation. They also produce Sea Chaser...

Don't need to start a long drawn out fight here. But if you are saying the the Maritime is the Kia. You are sadly mistaken. I too like the Parker boats but love everything about the Maritime. It fits the type of fishing I do.

Its a lot of money for a boat with no frills, I can agree with that, is it a solid well built boat? Yes, but is it worth the coin? Your choice.

In that particular comparison it is definetley a Kia. Its an alright boat. I didn't think it was built like a tank. Atleast not to parker standards of a tank...No offense meant
