Good luck Steve. Looks like the wind is right the next few days. I was hoping to get down this weekend, but it is looking like I'm going to have to wait until the last weekend of April.

I'm thinking of driving down either Monday or Tuesday for the day. The winds do look right.

I hear bait is hard to find down Hatteras way. I hope I can get some fresh here in Virginia Beach before I head down. My confidence is low, though.

Good luck, Steve. I think you'll have a shot at a big en.

If I'm down there, I look for ya.

I always plan my fishing trips months ahead of time around the full moon. If the water temps start warming up a little I’m hoping for a good week, key word being hoping. I’m also bring my fishing buddy Hank, he’s really more of a lady killer and he is easy to spot so to speak, Hank’s a Dalmatian. If ya see us stop by I always have an extra cold beer in the cooler.

It's always hard planning a fishing trip months ahead of time.

I just don't have the luxury of taking off at a moments notice.

In addition, most times I have to make it a day trip. That means leaving Virginia Beach in the middle of the night and returning from Buxton by (I hope) Midnight.

I try to plan my day trips to mix with a high tide at sunrise. In retrospect, maybe I should look at the moon phase a little closer???

To be honest, it's a crap shoot with the water temps and wind direction this time of year.

I don't like driving all the way to Ocracoke on a daytrip, either. And not much is happening around the Point yet.

My next shots at going South are April 10, April 17 and April 24. This Tuesday looks good. High tide at the Point at 6:51am. Sunrise at 6:35am. Visable moon at 93%.

If the winds turn back to SW or SSW after Saturday, I might take a drive. It might depend on finding fresh bait Monday night before I leave ... .

Think I'd have better luck at Hatteras Inlet????

Default Their Here!!!

Got to Buxton around 3 PM Saturday the 8th but didn’t get out to The Point till 6 PM caught the tail end of that bite, saw six big reds caught. I was told there were about 30 caught that day.
Friday the day before there were between 50 and 75 big drum caught, didn’t see it but I got the same report from different sources.
Sunday evening there were another 25 or so caught out on The Point.
Monday a cold front moved in, winds out of the North, it shut most everything down.
Tuesday morning I caught a large pup that I though for sure I would have to release, fortunately he was 27” fat and good eating.
Wednesday evening the winds started shifting out of the SW and started warming up the water, there were only about six drum caught.
Thursday evening all hell broke loose, I would estimate around 50 or so large drum caught, including a 53” monster.
Had to head home Saturday the 15th but understand there was another big bit out on at The Point that day also.
If you are headed down anytime soon and the weather holds you have a good chance at catching a big one.

Steve,

How is the point set up? Are there any goood bars that are within paddling range? I'm probably headed down later next week if the weather cooperates and trying to decide whether to bring along the yak.

You can still hike out to the bar off the point at low tide and there were drum caught off it. Presently there are no bars that you can yak out to, but give it a couple of months and that could change.
Good luck guys.

Thanks guys,

I think I'll leave the yak at home for this trip and wait to bring it down during cobia season. No need to burn extra gas briniging it if there isn't a reason to put it in the water.

Good luck this weekend John. Leave some for me for next week. I think I'm going to try shad and stripers on the Delaware this weekend.
