Default April 16-22

We're making the long drive down from Maine on April 16th to Avon, NC for a week and wondering how best to max out my fishing time on a limited budget. I'm a flyfisherman, and I know for many it's like admitting to being a Yankees fan in Fenway park (which I am as well), but I was hoping to spend some time surfcasting. I've been to the OBX years ago and we caught spot and croakers, but never a red drum. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I would look in the sound behind Avon then. Should have some nice bluefish and possible trout or two and maybe a red fish. Check with Frank Fobb at Frank and Frans he can point you in the right direction.
Intermediate fly lines are the best for the sound side--small Clousers and the likes. My favorite colors are black over orange and chartreuse and white.
The dredge slough would be one place to start. It starts 7 miles north of Avon at the Little Kinnakeet Lifesaving station. there are several access roads in. The slough is about 100 yards off the bank--parallel to the shore line. Another spot is just after you get off the Ocracoke Ferry and head to Ocracoke Village there are several sand roads to right that lead back to the sound side--the first one is close to the ferry. I use to catch mullet there in the spring for drum fishing but have had clients tell me about decent fly fishing. Same flies and lines.
have fun

basically any place you can fish a grub Big surf does pose problems tho. I know of one red around 40 pounds caught on fly in surf on the Point maybe 15 years ago.

We have caught a few from the boats up to 50 pounds on fly

This luck angler had several fish like this--little over 40 pounds on a boga grip
