Default Point closures

Cape Point Closures after 3-28-06
From Frank and Frans

This picture is a very rough description of changes made on Tuesday on closures at Cape Point. For those that have been to the point in the last several months you know that going over ramp 44 there is a dune next to the beach that at high tide is impassable. We have tried with no success at this point in getting access on the west side on this dune. Because of this problem it was imperative that we have good access going over ramp 44 and taking the right just over the dune onto the interdunal road to 2 openings on the south beach to access Cape Point. If you look at the picture leaving out the red line you will notice that the extemded encluse would have only given vehicles a narrow path down the south beach to the interdunal roads as access. Of course when winds were south west this access would be cut off as well as the narrow place one the north side at the dune area closing use of Cape Point all together. After much discussion Mike Murray (NPS Cape hatteras National Seashore Supt.) came up with what access proponents (at least 20 were present) could live with for now. That access is the red line show in the picture which is a corridor within the closure that vehicles will be allow to drive from the East facing beach to a wider area on the south facing beach when the bern of the beach is not usable due to high water condittions. a THANK YOU TO MIKE MURRAY FOR TRYING TO APPEASE ALL SIDES ON THIS ISSUE AND A WARNING THAT USFW AS NOT SIGNED OFF ON THE CLOSURES YET AND THE BIRDS ARE NOT ON THE GROUND HERE YET SO THIS IS VERY TEMPORARY AND THE STRUGGLE AND OUTLOOK IS VERY QUESTIONABLE.

It's a good start, sounds like the new super is trying a common sense approach that I would hope everyone can make work. Thanks for the report.
