i'm gonna be in carolina beach early april, hoping to catch some blues and drum. what lures would be best for this time of year? i have some mirror lures and an assortment of stingsilvers, along with a braid lure. my selection is not that big yet, but i'm working on it. any advice would be appreciated. thanks. __________________ if youre not having fun.....its your own fault |

Most people bait fish in the area in April but there is no reason that some lures would not work on blues, reds, or trout.
From the surf you need lures of two categories. 1) Metals. Use gold or silver Hopkins or KastMasters, 1/2 ounce to 1 1/2 ounce sizes, either with or without some bucktail or plastic dressing on the hook. Bounce and jig them slowly on the bottom for Reds or Trout. Swim them through the water for blues. 2) Grubs. Basically a jig head in the 1/4 ounce to 1 ounce size with some type of plastic worm/grub/tube/minnow body. In NC, the redhead jig with green body is probably the number #1 trout lure along the coast. Also, you may want to consider bucktail jigs, shad darts and Mirrolures. If the water has warmed to summer temperatures of 70+ degrees (May-Sept), a must have is the StingSilver or some other 1 1/2 - 2 ounce metal that can be thrown far and reeled fast. Spanish Mackrel!!! Colors - PINK!!!, white/pink, white/charteuse, white/green, etc.... From the pier you need 1) Got-chas. These are used for Spanish, Blues, and Trout. 2) Grubs. see above.
