Have a abu 7000 on the way. My frist conventional setup. What a good chunking rod for it. Mostly fish in Oct. down here. Anyone have a good suggestion? I know Oct is up and down. I guess 8+bait would be what I have seen most of the time I'am there.
Thanks |

For a beginner conventional rod there are two on the market which have been proven over the last three years. Both are under $150. Both would work well with a 7000 size abu.
For fishing 4-8 ounces plus bait the 12 Tica is the choice. These are avaliable at most tackle shops and from online retailers. For fishing 6-10 ounces plus bait the Ocean Master is the choice. This is avaliable from Bass Pro Shops / Offshore Angler.

Hey Mudd
Yeah the OM has been recommended to me from Surfslinger. When you say beginner.Which I am. Is it easier to use. I really like to buy things once and buy the "best" I can afford. The OM looks decent and very reasonable$$$. Are there better rods or are we talking 3-400 range. Which your right I am not going to spent that much. Any one you know have the OM. I have a couple of Tica's and they serve me fine. Thanks for the help. Maybe this fall I will actualy catch something good from the surf in the OBX don't care I just love it anyways. |

The Outcast 1625 is one of the nicer 2-piece convench blanks out there. Good match for the Abu 7000/7500's. I got mine with 6 inches removed from the tip. Very beefy, but astonishingly light.
You can get them custom wrapped - give the folks at Hatter Outfitters (do a search) a call. I think brand new they go for $450. There have been some fellas here who have been known to part with theirs.

I second what FWW said.......if are flexible on colors and the blank you can pick up some very nice used cusotme heavers for 250ish....they will outt perfom any produtcion rod in myopinion. If you dont want to spend that much then the Tica and OM are the way to go.

Got brand new Rainshadow from 8nbait and really really like it. Seems to have same spine as 1509 but featherlight. Love the 1509s though. Both cast about the same with same drop length and load but Rainshadow is nicer to hold.

For the bucks the Tica and OM are the most popular the Tica being a few bucks less and easier to cast than the OM heavy. There are a lot of good deals on used customs I picked up a nice 1508 breakaway last year for $200.

If you are not going to use the rod alot, the bps oceanmaster is a great deal. They came out with the "cape point special" for 149 this yr and I think you can find the oceanmaster for 119 (maybe cheaper). I have heard of lots of guide problems w/ the ticas so I would stay away from them. New heaver blanks are coming out all the time and people must have the latest and greatest so used ones are usually available. You are still looking at 250+ most of the time.

Critter Gitter - you mean you didn't run out and buy a "nail" after throwing that thing. What a beast - I almost fell over just holding it.

Yea if I need to throw 16nbait I might buy one after lifting weights and mass steroid consumption all winter to bulk up to about 350 lbs.
