Hey folks. I may be heading down sometime this September. What's runnin' on the OBX area during this month?

Thanks!

September is a fantastic month on the OBX. Just about everything is a possibility including hurricanes. The water temps usually change quite a bit during the month. Spanish, Pompano, Crokers, Spot, Sea Mullet, Flounder, Blues (up to 10 lbs), and Puppy Drum can all be very abundant. The early arriving Big Drum can also be around. Maybe a few Trout. There's even the possibility of False Albecore or Jack Crevale from the beach too.

Best bets are to fish sand crabs, shrimp, or bloodworms on small two dropper bottom rigs for Pompano, Sea Mullet, and Spot. Toss stingsilvers and other fast metal lures for Spanish or Blues. And best of all catch Drum of all sizes (especially Puppy Drum) using fresh caught Finger Mullet which will be running in the surf during September.

Hey, thanks Mudd.

As far as set ups go, was thnking of a 3 piece 7' spin travel rod for the light bait/float set ups, and maybe an 8'6" surf spinner for the same plus plugs & live bait, and a 10' spinner to lauch. Any reason to bring the 11 chunker? I'd be nervous abut these on a plane. Got a rod case but still...

I have seen some of the B+T shops rent if you don't want to put it on a plane. Just an idea. I think I saw one shop was 20 for the week and included a sand spike. HTH

Bring it all! There could possibly be times you would need it.

OK seriously, if you plan on doing any Big Drum fishing, you will need a rod and reel for bottom fishing with 6-8 ounces plus bait and 200+ yds of 15+ lb test line. If you plan on Puppy drum fishing you will bottom fish with 3-6 ounces and bait. For everything else on the list, everything from 3/4 ounce to 6 ounce lures/weight are possibilities.
