For wood think big. Metal lips and pencils are a good choice. Leave the needlefish home. 6" storm shads and big crocodile spoons are excellent choices. The bait this time of year could be 4-7" menhaden, large menhaden, large herring or croakers. If you fish moving water, darters are the way to go. Good luck.

Striper bass will eat the same baits, artificial or real, from Maine through South Carolina.
Some areas have specifics or lures / baits that work better than the others. Local tackle shops and other local fisherman will know and usually get you keyed in. Bring your binoculars and watch what others are using if you have trouble. This applies to any "new" area that you try on the surf. Watch-n-learn or experiment. Dont be afriad to fire something different from what everyone else is using either. The group I fish with has changed what the bass were "keyed on" before just be being a little different. If you have the wherewithal, carry a selection of all the lures listed above (which are all good and all work) in you beach buggy when going on a trip like this... having a "whole bunch of them at home" does you no good when the bass are blowing-up in front of you on a lure/lures you left home on the shelf. I carry several colors (and several of each) of every different lure I own in my truck at all times. The only ones left home are duplicates of ones I already have packed. This has paid off many times in many places. I'm from NJ too and if you can catch bass here, you can catch them almost anywhere. Go down there and give 'em hell. |
