Try the beach. Seriously, go buy some bait at a local tackle shop and ask them-it's bad form to ask here.

it's not 'bad form to ask here
the only thing is "exact spots " is a no-no
in all honestly the best thing to do is learn how to 'read the beach'
find a good hole & give it a shot ...
the beach up there is pretty flat ; but there are some nice cuts in the bars & some nice slews , ya just gotta find them . they have a bad tendancy of moving on ya all the time . so telling ysa there is a hole or a cut or a slew at location 'xyz' won't do ya much good if it's not there in a month or 2 ..
anything else ya need to know just give a shout
some one usually can help ya out or point ya in the right direction

Thanks derf. I was not looking for specific holes and I'm not new to the sport, just that area. I appreciate the reply and the insight.

[/quote]Don't know about a "flat beach",Derf. That's what everyone has told me,but the night I saw you,I saw at least 4 or 5 good drum holes before I got to where we were.. Fished there yesterday and there were some pretty spots.Got there towards the end of the bite.. Got skunked with Joe and Rob laughing at me with their limits in the truck. I couldn't catch one,but it was some pretty beach with a few folks bowed up...

yea , i know what ya mean kenny

but as far as 'flat' it sure doesn't look like the beach around avon to rodanthe ..
it's just a little harder to 'read ' up there ; or maybe i should say different 'read' ...

not trying to be a smart a** but the casting distance depends on what you are after ...
pompamo , blues etc can be right in the wash ...
others can be farther out ...
depends on the 'hole'' cut ' or' slew ' you are fishing. it's not like the 'point' when you are fishing for drum where ya gotta have a decent cast ....

Oh I totally understand on the distance thing. I guess I should have asked a different way.

When you read the cuts and are looking for fish. How do you know how long the cut is. I fished a few of the cuts up there and wasn't sure how you guys figured out the length your cast should be. The 2 weeks I was there the grass was a bastard. It was ok at low tide ,but when high tide came it drug it all back out what a mess. Any other place you would recommend to read up on cuts or fishing for drum(beside the beach) . I know you old salts learn from experence. I am learning slowly I guess.

These fish bounce all over the place down here.
Everyday is different. Holes can shift overnight.

Pretty much we attempt to keep tabs on 60 miles of beach which is almost impossible.

What I do is ride until I find bait or birds and begin there.

This place is really, really hard to pattern. Basically there is no pattern.

Poppy, thanks, my secret is out. There are times down here(Hatteras) where 8,10 or 12oz will not hold bottom. My advise to others is look for the spot nereby where the break is and you can use a 4oz to hold bottom. Not only will 4 hold there but will also cast farther if needed.
