Question

Hey folks, Steve here. 1st time posting.

I am headed down to Hatteras on Sunday for a week of vacation. I am looking to catch any and all of flounder, spanish, drum. I have always used cut bait and I am tired of the same old style. I have read that stingsilvers, rattletraps, bucktails, and gotcha's are some good choices. Am I on the right track? I will be using some 6' rods w/ 20lb test.

Please advise....

Thanks!

hummm... a 6' rod might be ok for the piers , but ya might be a little under gunned for the beach .
stingsilvers for the spanish ....
gotchas off the pier ....might get something in close in the surf
if ya have a longer rod, for more distance, that will throw 2 oz stingsilvers you'll be good for the surf ..
bucktails tipped with 'fishbites' might get ya some flounder ...
rattletraps don't have a clue , but thats nothing unusual..

derf pretty much nailed it. I use a 7 1'2' with 10 lb. both for tossing Got-cha plugs from the pier and 4" curly-tails, Bass Assissins, etc. in the surf. For long distance heaving with Sting-silvers I have both and 8' and a 9'. I believe they're both matched with reels containing 14 lb. The 9' might have 17 lb.

Also a local favorite, Uncle George's buck-tails have been producing. They're available at most tackle shops here on the OBX. TW's at MP 10+ here in Nags Head has a good supply right now.

Distance is the name of the game when surf fishing the OBX. You are going to need a much longer rod.

Getting gas was no problem it was about 40 cents more per gallon than say Nags Head.
