I will be coming down to the Hatteras/Buxton area to surf fish the last week of October. I have seen a lot of talk about beach closures here on the forum. I also heard there is a surf fishing tournament that week as well. Does anyone have any advice as to any general area to stay clear of or head to? I don't have a 4x4 so I will be on foot/cart. Thanks for any insight, Rob

The Tournament that week will be on the beach between Avon and Salvo. If you don't have a 4X4 you best chance to catch fish will be to try around the old lightouse location and the old jettys there. Also you can park and fish the beach area at Ramp 43 with a very short walk. If its too rough or sometype of strong Noreastner blowing, then I would suggest driving down to just past the Hatteras Inlet ferry and fish the area across from the Graveyard Of The Atlantic Museum. Once again there is a convient place to park with a very short walk to an excellent fishing area.

Cool

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. I am getting so excited to go; I don't think even $5/gal gas would keep me from coming. Rob

We are thinking of staying at the Cape Hatteras Motel. My wife prefers an ocean view as where I could have gone with a sound view and save the $ for gas. We are normally family tent campers but I know our Atlantic Coast can be unpredictable with wind and storms. I only want to get wet while fishing. Can you reccomend any particular bait shop for service/freshest bait? How were the bait prices down there? Maybe I should pick some up before I go down? I tend to fish up to 3 rods at a time. I could use a lot of bait in 3 days. Rob

As Derf said, F&F's in Avon for bait. Red Drum Tackle in Buxton is also good.

If you are planning on staying at Cape Hatteras Motel.....that's right on the beach in Buxton. EXCELLENT fishing right there anywhere along the Buxton beach.

Thanks, that's good to hear. I plan on bringing my surf cart to cover more beach if necessary. I'm really looking forward to it. The last time I was down there, I was just a kid and caught a flounder in the surf. The line and reel had a birds nest in it and I hand lined the flounder in. Those are some of the memories of childhood that you never forget! By the way, is there any chances of catching flounder in the surf? Or is it like it is up here on Assateague where the odds are not in your favor? Rob
