Hey guys-

I've recently transferred down to Camp Lejeune, NC and am currently living in jacksonville. So far, I have not yet been able to get the kayak out and hit some of the local waters. I thought I'd drop a thread here to see if anyone familiar with the area could give some suggestions as to some good tackle shops or GENERAL locations where me and the Mrs. might spend an afternoon on the yaks fishing. I'd appreciate any and all help!

Thanks in advance.

PS. The search feature wasn't working or else that would have been my first source of info...

You can trout fish (weakfish for the yankees) all over the New River/Sneads Ferry area. This area is on the south side of Camp LeJune. Just remember to be careful, alligators have been found in the New River before.

Or, you can trout fish and puppy drum fish (redfish for the cajuns) all over the Swansboro/Bear Island area. This area is on the north side of Camp LeJune.

East Coast Sports in Surf City is good Topsail Island Area fishing lead. Plenty of Yaking spots from Swansboro to Wilimington. Enjoy

Try to get hooked up with "SuBourbon" (Russ). He's an NC resident, although he lives somewhat north of the area you are speaking about. I think "Kip" is another one who has a place on Emerald Isle, about 20 or 30 miles north of the Onslow area. Onslow Beach is in J'ville.

Check out the SOL membership list and send these guys a PM asking them for info.

I was born at Camp LeJeune in 52 and went to high school in Havelock when my Dad was stationed at Cherry Point MCAS back in the late 60s. I used to fish parts of the Neuse River, a tidal river basin, and all around the Atlantic Beach, Morehead City and Emerald Isle area years ago. It's been so long that I can't give you any current info but I can tell you that you will be thrilled with the sport that's available!

This is drum country my friend, and you will find that they spawn in many of the tributaries of the rivers. So do shad and stripers. The blue crabs are thicker than fleas on a barnyard dog and the flounder fishing is supreme! Enjoy!

yep big jim,

sitting here at the beach house right now.

joeb,

soot me an e-mail or PM me and i'll try and help you out. i heard that there is a new sporting goods store outside of jacksonville that is supposed to be pretty good (close to the drag strip out toward 258). fish tend to be on the smaller size compared to the northern OBX, but there are a few big ones around. most serious fishing people down here do so with the aid of boat. moving here for good in june 06, and will be able to do more "serious" fishing then. welcome and shoot me an e-mail or something.

Thanks for the info! Just curious, have you been out fishing lately in the area? With the upcoming holiday, I have some days off and am researching different areas to explore.
