Hey guys ill be down in Nags Head at Mile Post 11 1/2 right next to the pier August 6th - August 14th and i just bought my new rod and reel with all the extras. Not too fancy but it should get the job done. Ill be reeling with the Penn 113HN with 30 lbs test and 131 lbs wire leader with 7/0 gauge hooks. My pole is a (dont know the full name) but is a Penn 6' heavy duty rod. Its red and black(BEAUTIFUL). Ill be doing both surf and pier fishing. Whats good fishing this time of the year like big game fish.

Unless you are a pier jockey looking to hook a king, I don't think all of the heavy equipment is needed for August fishing. I use a 61/2 spinning rod with 10 lb. test in the summer because your main targets are going to be trout, flounder, pompano, and bluefish. The point is closed (I believe it still is), so the big reds are out of the question. Good luck.

Greenone, if you want to fish for big fish you will need to get setup with a system called (pin-rigging). This requires casting a big 8oz or more sinker 150yrds off the end of the pier. Your rod & reel will be used as the trolly line, you need to also have a HEAVER and a reel that holds 200yrds+ 20lb mono. I hate to tell you to go to other sites, but do a www on red drum tackle and peir & surf for in depth info on dooing this. Or as was sugested heavy Largemouth Bass tackle will work alot better for all of the other fish available. Also check with the piers in Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head for this info. You will not be able to cast the combo that you have, sorry.

Yes it would. When you get to the beach, go to a tackle shop and have them take off your old line and spool new line on. This gives you time to quiz them about what type of fishing is good at that time. use the local knowledge to your advantage.
good luck longcaster
