Well NPS Resource Managers get their way!
I spoke with Mark Hardgrove this afternoon and Cape Point will close this evening at 8pm and reopen at 7 am tomorrow. Since Phil Francis said his good bye last Friday, Mark is acting superintendent for this week. The closing is because of piping plover chicks which came from a nest a mile or so down the south side. While the birds had over two miles of beach already closed I assume that they just had to have Cape Point also.
Needless to say I am and have been disappointed in NPS resource management's lack of concern for the safety of the chicks. The over abundance of both herring and black back gulls will create predation upon the chicks but so be it.
The lack of a comprehensive avian plan for the park which should have been done years ago by Steve Harrison, NPS resource manager, just goes to show the hodge podge management that we, the citizens and users of the park have to put up with. It is time for a new resource management team for this park. A team which can work with our communities and not act as if they are theives in the night, which they are. The resource management team steals your access year after year with no concern at all for the birds and successful fledging of chicks.
Never think that this is about the birds, it is not. This is about a biased resource management group that wants everyone off of the beach and they will do anything they can to achieve this.
Pissed off again I am.
