Derf hit it right. For the NC OBX you hear of about 1 per month being caught between May and September. Peak months are December and January.

There have been a few legal fish caught around the bridge pilings at OI, but that's a boat fishery.

FWIW I just got back from the family vacation in Duck. Surf cast every evening caught some blues, skates, shark, and tons of croaker. Anyway a person I was talking to said he had a nice striper on that straightened out his hook. Hooked it close to shore on squid.

I'm going out to Duck next week. Any tips on what worked in the surf? i.e. how far out, bait, etc..

When the water is clear the blue fish come into shore. I used a silver megabait plug and caught a few. When the water clouded up I used a bottom rig with both blood worms and squid caught fish on both baits. The majority of the fish I caught were relitivly close to shore either on the bar or in the trough between the shore and the bar.

If they are close, do you think it would be worth hitting with a fly rod? sometimes, I set up a 12' weight n' bait and do some casting/fly in the meantime.
