Just got back from the beach this morning and was pleased to have caught a nice 24" puppy drum and about the same size Bluefish. Saw another Big Blue caught measured out at a little over 28" and for this area that is a nice fish. They have been working on redirecting Bogue Inlet which has changed the topography (sp) of the beach adding a bit of structure down near the inlet. Dr. Bogus caught a 24" Spanish there the other day and several drum in the 30 to 34 inch range on 8# test on a 7' rod with an altered 3/4 oz gold kastmaster. Thought I'd let you know about this area for those of you headed this way this summer....

Nice... How is Bogue looking as far as kayak-friendly water?

very friendly as it is only about 2 foot deep over 90% of the water..... they run some eco-tours for kayaks just down the street from us. there is also a nice "bird island" about 3/4 of a mile from our house that many people enjoy paddling to.

I've kayaked behind the island back under the bridge that goes to Cape Carteret. Lots of pretty cool spots to fish.

Hey Kip, did you get to throw the Purglas?
Congrats on the pup.

surffishn,

yeah, my wife and i have a house down there and as a result spend most weekends and vacations there. its a great place to relax, but the fishing doesn't compare to the hatteras, ocracoke, avon, nags head, and oregon inlet parts of the outer banks, but we try and make the best of it. i don't do the pier very often, preferring to try my luck in the surf, and as a result of the type of fish that typically hangs out there, i 've scaled down the size of the equipment as well. small fish can be a lot of fun on the smaller stuff. how much longer are they scheduled to be in the area, might have to have them over for a meal....

salty,

got your PM and responded, look forward to having you in the area.....

keep me posted.....

as it turns out, the nice developing structure near the inlet since 2 weeks ago, has returned to a very flat beach. fished saturday and sunday early AM and nothing. didn't see a baitfish in the water, although it was blowing South. i guess the influx of 6+ inches of rain didn't help matters. the spanish are generally in pretty thick at that time of the year.
