There can be a lot going on. Depending on the winds, the water can be warm enough to wade, or you may need waders. Watch the Rutgers satellite site or go to one of the local sites like the Avalon Pier that lists the surf temps. Bring mostly light stuff (7-9'rod and matching reel), but if you have a heaver, bring it. Never know what is going to be happening at the end of the pier. However, if there are drum around, you better be able to cast straight and far because the hard core guys at the end of the pier might not appreciate you crossing them every cast. When the drum are out there, the space on the end of the pier is about 1'/man. However in the slougs along the beaches, almost anything is available, again depending on water temperature. Flounder, speckled and grey trout, blues, puppy drum, stripers, etc. Tackle shops will try and steer you right. Also can wade behind Bodie (pronounced Body)Island Light. Go to the end where there is a gate and stone path. About 1/2 mile walk but there are usually big specks back there. Follow advice of tackle shops on lures/jigs/bait/rigs. Main thing is have a good time.
