i may be on the outer banks in late july. what kinds of fishing opportunities will be available then? i live near oakland, ca. i fish from a kayak for stripers and salmon primarly, but i am likely to charter a boat for one day of my trip. i also enjoy surf fishing.

Chris,

I was there last July and have been there many other times in the summer.....the best way to describe the fishing then is SLOW and SMALL FISH.

Unless you're really jonsing for fish....I would save my money on a charter. It's pretty sad to see what they bring in for the money that time of year.

First off, it depends what type of charter you are talking about.

I went on my first off shore charter out of Hatteras in early July (a make-up).....we bailed dolphin all day, and had two on the boat that were citation size....had on a sailfish, but the guy lost it....I got my turn in the chair and brought in a LARGE spanish mackeral....

Back at the dock, there were dolphin laying all over, and a good 8-10 boats had billfish flags flying, and there were a few tuna laying around.......

Inshore or sound charters will get you mostly small bluefish, and speckled and grey trout, perhaps some puppy drum, but you can do all that yourself wading in the sound in the right spots, or just renting a skiff.

As I said, the soundside will get you speckled trout (that time of year, about 12-18", but they are fun on light tackle and good eating) and summer flounder. When I go in late June, that is how I spend the majority on my fishing time.....

Oceanside, top water, expect small bluefish, and if the wind is right and the water clear, spanish mackeral. And you always have the chance of catching some strange stuff running with the blues and spanish....I've caught a few ribbonfish, and a houndfish.

On the bottom in the surf in murky water days, all the small croakers you could ever want to catch, sea mullet (northern kingfish), spot, summer flounder....with a bit clearer water, pompano.

And then there are the sharks and rays.....and ya never know what else might be swimming out there.....a stray cobia (though July is a bit late for that), jacks, king mackeral.......

And if you are into blue claw crabs, the sound will keep you busy doing that as well....

Just made my reservations for this year about two weeks ago......6/11-6/25 in Avon....... .....I say it every year, but THIS WILL be my year for a cobia.......

The chair is a nice place to rest the Penn 50W or 80W that comes as standard equipment on a gulf stream trip...

July is a fun time for light tackle in the evenings on the beach- bluefish and spanish macks. If you really need to get yanked around by something prehistoric, lob a big bloody gob of something out at dusk or a little after in the general vicinity of where the blues/macks were feeding previously. The sea-hoovers and biters will be in there snapping up the leftovers.

Fnb - really didn't need the chair at all......

The downrigger started screaming, and it was my "turn" in the "chair" so I got the rod.......

It does get pretty slow that time of year. If your surf fishing you can expect to catch Blues and Spanish on 1 ½ & 2 oz sting silvers and as SuBourbon said, at dark cast out a chunk of meat if you want to get jerked around by a shark or big ray. I went out on a charter last July 4th weekend, we caught a total of five Tuna, I lucked into the largest at 50 lbs, we also caught some dolphins. When we got back to the dock other boats had done pretty good as well, dolphins, tuna and king macks. Have fun what ever you do.

For offshore, you might try the Pelican out of OI,Capt Arch Bracher. If he has an opening, you won't be disappointed,if you want big offshore fish. Also the poacher with Devin Cage, out of Pirates Cove.He fishes inshore and can put you on some cobes, amberjacks, lots of bottom fish as well..

Here in Hatteras, you might try Doug Martin,or Darreyl Hendricks, both can put you on some speckles, maybe a drum or cobe as well,YES,even in July..

Inshore you might try some of the pulloffs at Pea Island or Rodanthe with the yak. Bring lots of light jigs, bucktails, and mirrorlures, fish deeper areas near grass. A flyrod may come in handy if you have one.. Stop in at Hatteras Jack's in Rodanthe, ask for Ryan,he can help if you are new to the area..
