Myself and a buddy are planning a trip to the Inlet to head out on a charter later this month. Our original plans were to drive the 8 hours the night before, jump on the boat for a full day and then drive the 8 hours back for our short trip. We have since thought about arriving a day early to swim some plugs in the Hatteras surf and maybe throw some bunker heads. Is the action good off the beaches at this time or would we be just spinning our wheels? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (locations also by PM if needed) We also figure that if conditions do not permit the boats from leaving the docks we can hit the surf as a back-up.

After mid January surf fishing usually slows down, but can still be productive. You would probably do better surf fishing from Cape Point to Hatteras Inlet and what the hell if you can't go out on a boat it's fishing and it beats the office. Best bet is to check with the local tackle shops. Good luck.

It's official! We'll be coming down on the 17th to fish the surf and chartered the DOA for the 18th. Thanks for the responses. Looks like Cape Point will be our starting point on that Monday.
