Ditto what derf said. Small place packed with good stuff & good folk. Best shop on the north end of Hatteras Island.

Very reputable shop, known for producing some of the best custom rods on the OBX.

Not to sour people....but they do tend to jack up prices when bait is scarce.....thats why I wont deal with them. 2 weeks ago, 2.50 a pound when its usually 1$.

I am pretty sure that hj has always charged at least 1.50/lb for menhaden even when it has been plentiful. I also know that at least 1 shop had to pay 1.00/lb to the netters recently for quality menhaden. I have had nothing but positive experiences in dealing with ryan and hatteras jacks. Very friendly and knowledgable - I highly recommend them.

2 weekends ago we had a get together down OBX, and prior to heading south fresh bunker was scarce and thus hard to find, so picked up a flat of fresh from Kool Ice up here, and iced it down, held up well throughout the weekend. With the small number of fresh bunker available, it seemed everybody who had fresh jacked up prices, and a couple a shops wouldn't sell the "fresh" that arrived that day until they sold the old still sitting on ice, apparently some of which had been on ice for two or three days. Guess that weekend it was just a supply/demand thing, and short supply meant higher prices for the demanders.
Jyst my 2 cents. |

Ryan is a class act. His custom rods are among the best you're gonna find. Anywhere. I would look at the 1508 or, especially, the 1509 if you're gonna be throwing some weight.
By the way, I was paying $2.50lbs last week for bunker at TWs. Ryan was selling it for $1.50. I caught a 43" with the bunker I bought from Ryan. Brought the fish back to be weighed and he took my picture - for free.

My favorite thing about HJ's is the fact that whenever I go in there, they are happy to see me, willing to shoot the breeze, eager to share whatever project or experimental rod is in progress.
Even better, they are NOT trying to pick my pocket every time I turn around (like some other shops I'll leave unnamed). I'm proud to count Ryan and Jim among my friends on the island. |

Great Rod Shop! Ryan is a standup guy, but I miss the old man. I got alot of free tutoring on banks fishing from him. If I go for another heaver it will be that cutdown 1508 with the trigger reel seat and HJ will build it.
Pete
