How is surf-fishing in mid-October in Avon to Hatteras area? What species likely to be there then? Thanks.

Ha ha, guess maybe the trout are still around, the blues may be in town, rumors of drum, and since the stripers have left the northern areas, must be heading south. Any ways, heading OBX staying around Rodanthe, but will be fishing where ever it might look good.

Now on the same note, what might happen down there in early November, or maybe spring 2010?

My question was serious. Just got back from fishing Hatteras Nov. 11-18. Fishing was great: puppies, specs, stripers, and more. Weather was mediocre for first half of week - VERY windy. For various reasons, need to schedule for different time period in 2005 and looking at week in mid-Oct. Is that week likely to be a lot less desirable? I probably would like warmer weather then and don't mind fishing for different specie. But will there be decent fishing in the surf anywhere near the Point?

The Drum Tournament is the third weekend in October. That should tell you something. I would never pass up any October week.

PK,
We've been going down to Hatteras the third week of October for about 15 years and it's usally really nice weather wise and is normally in the middle of the drum run. Other species caught will vary according to the weather, water temperature and bait movement. That being said we have caught drum, trout(grey and speckled),sea mullet, bluefish, cobia, jacks, flounder, blowtoads, pompano, surf perch,on all kinds of bait and artificials. The biggest factor you can't depend on is the weather, it could be late summer like or late autumn weather, and some days you go from waders and a sweatshirt to short pants and a t-shirt in a couple hours. We like mid-October in the Promised Land and have plans to go back for our 16th year next October.

You could have some real good red drum fishing - the point area absolutely stunk this fall for that. Mid october is still too early for ocean stripers. Assorted small stuff as mentioned should be around. If you are down the week of the drum tournament, the northern beaches will be extremely crowded yet the point area is off limits to them.

was down for week mid oct. couldnt keep 8 oz on the bottom ocean side. went to sound just above hatteras inlet. steady fishing all week. couple 19"+ flounder every day, more bluefish than you want. couple speck, 1 amber jack, lots of rays. had some biters out there and couldnt even turn them lost 7 rigs, one on 80lb leader bit right through. 1 week never saw a drum or spanish. people said they where getting drum but I never saw one. water was nice for swimming. bring cast net bait all over the place.
Ill take oct as one of the best months.
