I am headed to that area for xmas to visit some family.

I've never been there.

How is the fishing down there? I will be down there the weekend of dec 23 for a few days.

Should I bring a couple of my surf rods?

from washington, nc, you'll still need to drive about an hour to do some surf fishing. i'd head to the nags head/ oregon inlet area and do some striper fishing. might be some speckled trout still hanging around as well. hope you enjoy the visit!

Kip if you can get to the coast in an hour from "Little Washington" w/o getting a ticket from Tyrell and/or Dare Counties finest you be one lucky sucka. Got to run north 23-30 miles to Plymouth and about an hour and a quarter from there.

Seriously, DO NOT speed between Plymouth & Nags Head, 4 is fine, 5+ and it's a fine. Main source of income in Tyrell County (Columbia) is soybeans, peanuts and traffic fines.

Striper fishing should be picking up pretty good off the beach from Nags Head to Oregon Inlet with blitzes possible but very localized.

Maybe be some specks, puppy drum, schoolies around Washington but not sure. A 7' spinner & grubs would be the trick there.

I was wondering what type of aircraft he was flying to do it in an hour.
Map Quest puts Washington to Nags Head at 115 miles and 2 hrs 45 min. I lived in Aurora in the early 70's and there was just no "easy" route to the OBX.

From Washington to the OI bridge will take atleast 1.5 hrs, closer to 1.75. And I'm always traveling late at night with no traffic.

feetinsand - an Aurora boy huh? Grew up in Pamlico County. Small world isn't it.

Kip, these guys are lost. Don't let them get to you. They need maps.

"you'll still need to drive about an hour to do some sure fishing." Notice how Kip never said it would take an hour to get to Nags Head / Oregon Inlet area.

Think out of the box (or out of the OBX) fellas. Its about 30 mins from Washington to New Bern and about another 30 mins to Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle. So, from Washington, one could be surf fishing in the Atlantic in 60-75 minutes. And we all know that on decent winter days there is a purty good speckled trout bite down there.

But, then I would take some trout rods to catch some trout, Mudd.

Talked to Snuffy yestiddy and hope to see ya on the beach after Christmas.

Stroth, I may see some folks from the Div of Marine Fisheries tomorrow or Thursday that work out of Washington. I'll see if I can get the skinny on fishing around Washington around Christmas.

Thumbs up

I am a little confused

Hopefully I will figure out something before the holidays.

I have fished emerald isle several times so I know that area a little.

BaitWaster---whatever you can come up with is much appreciated.

Trout rod? What kind of rod is that?

Thanks for watching my back there Mudd.. like you said I didn't indicate that Nags Head was that close.......

Been catching some nice trout down EI way thus far this season. Headed to OI this weekend with the oldest step son to do some striper fishing, or at least a lot of casting, depending upon whether or not the fish show up

Trout rod - something in the 6 1/2' to 8' range that will cast about a 1/2 ounce mirrolure and lead head rubs sufficient distance to attract the spotted or gray sea trout, spinning or baitcasting depending upon the preference of the angler.

Plenty of good fishing in Little Washington, guys... If you have a small boat, you could do some serious damage on the specks and flounder in town there.

Resident schoolie stripers around the bridges all winter per DMF person I talked to. Think you can keep 3 >=18". He doesn't use live bait but has had great sucess with a dark or "pumpkinseed" 8" plastic worm with a stinger hook. He said the bite is very, very light that time of year.

As SuBoubon said, best opportunities are from a boat.

Kip covered the "trout rod" description. 6 1/2' to 8' rod rated 1/4 to 1 1/2 oz.

The Pamlico inside the city of Washington is very brackish/fresh. I'm sure in the Spring there is a shad run plus a small rockfish run. I have caught numerous Largemouth Bass between the highway bridge and the old railroad bridge. On one trip we caught both Flounder and Lgmouth bass off of the RR bridge pilings.
But I've never fished that area between November and March.
