Am planning a family trip for 2005 to Hatteras Island. Am looking for best time to schedule that will be be good for BOTH kite-boarding AND surf-fishing to satisfy different members of the family. Would be good if was in "of-season" period for house rental rates (i.e., not mid-summer). We did it mid-November this year; that was great for fishing not so good (too cold) for kite-surfing. Can't do in that same period next year anyway for other reasons. When would you suggest, and what kind of fish am I likely to catch from the beach in Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras area then? Thanks much.

Cool

PK,
I don't kite, I wind surf and surf and usually head down around Easter. Some years its early and others its late April. The wind has been steadiest later in April with warm southwesterlies and thermals. Earlier, it can be a hard Northeast, which is alot colder. The fishing has never been great for me, but it's usually because I'm too tuckered out from surfing or sailing and it was a night bite. Real Kiteboarding in Buxton and Avon are the experts to search out on the web. Ty Luckett (a windsurfer I met in the Gorge years ago) and Tripp Foreman are the Gurus of Kite surfing down there. Do a search find there website and ask them whats up? Sprin in Hatteras is a great way to start off the season. You could have 25knts all day and the Drum on Da Point if you play you're cards right.
Pete

PK, sounds like you are looking for warm weather weeks when the fishing could be good and the prices are "off-season". Basicially your choces for this are:
April - can be great Drum fishing. Weather iffy at times.
May before Memorial Day - can be good Drum fishing early and good Cobia fishing late.
Sept after Labor Day - can be great anything fishing - pompanos, sea mullets, spot, blues, small black drum, puppies, croakers, spanish, occasional big Red Drum, etc. Generally No Cobia or Stripers. Also peak Hurricane season...so plans need to be flexible.
Oct - Great fishing ...more of Septs variety with things bigger.
Nov - possible colder weather with Drum, trout, and early Stripers.
