Find the specks in the sound....if you are in Avon, they are close by, and if ya got yaks, they are closer than you think.....all I'm gonna say is think just a bit SOUTH, and a channel and an island......after that, you're on your own....(but if ya stop by and talk to Frank, and mention my name, he MIGHT clue ya in...... )....but that's up to him.....

We stay in salvo & I fish the lagoons.Have caught redfish, trout and other fish.
There is a housing devolpment that has a dock & ramp with alot of little cuts & island, great fishing in am but wind surfers in pm.
Also have caught croaker & pompano on surf about half mile south of ramp that is on way out of salvo (south #48 ? )on clam bits.Best fishing am-pm,no luck during day.

Thumbs up

hey guys, thanks so much for all the tips and tricks!. no we didnt catch any specks. i had alot of rubber tails nipped off by some critter or another as i worked the jigs back to shore. i saw a couple of other ppl fishing the sound down there but dint see anyone catch anything. the big news seemed to concern a 63 pound king mack that a kid caught off avon pier. well my buddy and i foolishly took a charter out from manteo to catch some fish. well we caught a few short stripes, dopey little croaker, and it gets worse.... small i mean small little (yes grab on to your hats..) small bullheads yes the freshwater ones.. lol they weent longer than my hand. i felt my wifes eyes burning a hole in my back after dropping 150 dollars to catch tiny bullheads around the manteo bridges. just slap a sucker tag to my forehead. anyway my buddy left and i had the second week 8/1-8/8 to myself. i explores oregon inlet, and discovered i should have fished here all along. i figured out the sloughs pretty easily, and caught flounder stripers and those nasty lil mystery fish that kept nibbling the tails off my twistertails. plus on the ocean side about 4 miles south of oregon inlet. the pelicans and terns played host to the throngs of spanish macks spraying the surface as they harrassed baitfish everywhere. unfortunatly i couldnt cast far enough to reach them, and after last seasons mishap with trying to fish my yak on the ocean (while towing a shark{true story but thats for another time}) i didnt want to brave the waves.. but i love the OBX and will certainly return again. possibly this fall. oregon inlet i am yours.. oh yea, anyone ever come across a mother load of oysters just west of rodanthe????? hint hint theres an old old wreck nearby.....

Since you are going to be on the OBX another week, catch the ferry over to Ocracoke your wife will enjoy it. Talk to Bob and Nancy at Tradewinds Tackle, they will put you on fish. A good website for info on the OBX is

Sounds like you had fun anyways? I'm taking my new Kayak down there for the first time in 2 weeks. I'll be staying in Avon. I'm going to paddle the sound and want to try the ocean. I'd love to hear the shark story in the ocean? Any advice would be very appreciated......
