Question

Don't you guys get some good shots of Cobia and other cool things from the sand down there about now? Or is that already a memory?

Cobia from the sand sounds like a real wrasslin' match

Tim.....cobia is all but done on Hatteras Island.....target times are early May thru mid to possibly late June.........there may still be some around here and there, but for the most part, you're a month or so late.......

I was down there last week.....and the fishing is poor at best. Some small bluefish....very small flounder.....spot in the backwaters.

The charters were coming in after a full day with some pretty weak catches as well. Most were lucky to have caught a couple yellow fin in the 40-50 lb range.....I saw a couple cobia....small brown shark....lots of little and I mean little dolphin...and some various other small stuff. But the people chartering the boats seemed happy enough and I guess that's what counts.

Cobia are generally a May/June thing.

In July and August the really Big Game fishing in inshore North Carolina is either
1) big biter Sharks from the beach or piers,
2) in the Pamlico Sound, Pamlico River, and Neuse River...Tarpoon 75-200 lbs (boat fishing),
3) and finally in Aug and Sept, in the Pamlico Sound, Big Red Drum 30-70 lbs (boat fishing).

Don't believe all those negative fishing reports....
Went out on an inshore charter on 7/26/04...
saw 3 cobia, hooked 2, my son landed 1....

I had the first one on and lost it....

We got into a school of red drum 25 - 40 lbers..
talk about fun....

Between me and my 3 sons we caught 18 reds in about an hour and a half.

You CAN still catch fish in the middle of the summer!

About ten years ago I took the 30 minute fly around the island with Buruss Flying Center out of Frisco. It was a little bitty plane and our pilot was a very nice young man. As you probably know, you can see big fish from the air and we saw schools of dolphin. The pilot mentioned that he had seen 10 foot sharks in the surf while swimmers were swimming out past them. Kinda freaked me out. I think it was in Sept 2001 a couple was attacked by a shark just north of Avon and the man was killed and the woman suffered bites but lived. I don't swim down there too much anymore. I hope I'm not out of line with this info. But ofcourse shark attacks are extremely rare and you are in more danger driving to the beach on the highway than getting eaten by a shark.
