hey guys,
ive been heading down to northern rodanthe for the last three summers, but last summer was the first one i really tried some serious fishing. the pelicans were dive bombing the outer bars off rodanthe, so one morning i headed out in my yak, and tried in vain to catch some spanish. so i decided to drift for summer flounder with a yellow bucktail tipped with a squid strip. caught a four foot shark all toothy! not sure what kind it was, but was interesting that i caught it so close to shore.now over to the sound side, there was this old wreck about a 1/4 mile from shore. i would wade out there to see these foot and a half to two foot fish warily cruising around the wreck. not sure what they were. i tried for them with shrimp only to get my bait stolen every time. i tried flies small poppers but no hits. the only good part of it all was the wreck was loaded with tasty juicy oysters. ok all this said, im headng back down there to avon for the last week of july, and rodanthe for the first week of august. besides spanish, what else can or should i try for? im also eager to explore oregon inlet with my yak. any hints or tips would really be appreciated. lure types? baits? sound fishing vrs ocean fishing. thanks in advance.

Good area...if your taking the yak, there is an old ferry crossing (I think)on the sound, that's got good fishing for flounder, blues, and I'm guessing the fish you saw were drum, so fish accordingly

big bucktails.... cobia and drum.... i agree the fish you saw in the sound were likely red drum...

look for cobia and big jacks while you are in the yak..

south side sound side of oregon inlet - bucktail for specks, blues, whatever. very strong current.
off bertha drive they dredged that sound area a few years ago. deeper water.
do not go near the pier as you'll get bombed.
good luck.

Those fish could actually be big Mullet. I used to see the same thing. I would throw everything to them and they wouldn't hit. One day I got a good look at them and realized they were big mullet. There are lots of them down there and I don't think they take anything. Though in florida I hear you can chum them up with bread.
