Fellows,
If you had to choose between a Diawa Slosh 30 and a Penn 525, which would it be and why? I am looking into a Penn Mag 525 with/without the mag conversion, due to my brand loyalty to Penn and it being made in the States. Would rather spend my green backs in this Country. I know the OBX distance casters use both, and would like to know what you think about these two reels. Your opinions are greetly appreciated. Have a very happy New Year! Steve MSA#9999 |

Well, it depends. I absolutely HATE the gear box on the diawa's, BUT, I have 2 of them. Simply because they cast great, have great drags, a high gear ratio, hold lots of 20# line, handle the sand well, and are built like tanks. The penn 525mag is every bit as good as the diawa and the gear box doesn't get in the way - but - it won't hold enough 20# line. Have to drop down to 15 or 17. As soon as I can find a reel as good as the diawa where the gear box is not in the way, then my diawa's will get retired. Yall can keep your abu 7000's and your calcuttas, If the penn 975cs had a higher speed retrieve it would be perfect.

i have 4 Penn 525mags and love the reels! as mentioned, i use 15 and 17# test line (big game and sufix) and have never had a problem. with the line ratings being rather conservative, i am really fishing with 21 to 24# test anyway.
the reel will work well without the mag conversion, HOWEVER you will eventually only have two workable settings. i would invest the $$ and get the larger magnet carriage installed. again, PM me if you need addiitonal information. i have the 975 as well, but i really feel the 525 is a better casting reel. it also seems to sit well on all of my rods and fits nicely into my hands as compared to some of the larger reels. good luck!

Kip And NCsurffisher,
Thanks alot for the information. Is Diawa phasing out the Slosh 30? I know they have the new Grand Wave(silver) and the Slosh-V models. Getting back to the Penn 525Mag, I will have to order the conversion model from HO, for the Spring. Hope you fellows are going to make Montauk in the fall. Have a happy and healthy New Year! Steve |

Love that new 6600 ABU reel just got from Hatteras Jacks with smoothies and rocket fuel! It's reel
smooth and fast! and light! and of course the added power handle helps a bunch too! After all Oregon Inlet light up from the 31st to the 2nd and the 6600 C5 worked miracles! Just loved it! HC |
