Question

I'm planning a trip next month and have read that a SW wind will turn things on. From what I've seen its been blowing sw 10-20 for the last couple of days. Will this sw blow help the NC guys predict the best place (during this time of year DEC-Jan) to target reds, stripers, or blue fish or are the fish scattered in the winter?

I'll also be on foot the entire time so any walk on advise would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

i know that SW winds are what we generally look for with drum fishing as it tends to push the warmer water and the baitfish into the beach around the point at cape hatteras. it was my understanding that in striper fishing most people were looking for a strong NW blow. since my expereince with stripers has been limited to the last several years, i will defer to the more knowledgeable.

pea island (from south of oregon inlet to north of rodanthe/waves/salvo) is a good place to walk over the dunes and fish. you will need a free permit to fish there at night. baitwaster has the site where you can download your own instead of trying to find the fed. office where they are issued, shoot him a PM. the south of oregon inlet has a parking lot and the hike over to the beach isn't too bad. ramps 27, 30, 34, and 38 (avon) have parking lots and another easy walk over to the beach. coquina beach just south of nags head is another easy access area as well.

if you want to expereince the "point", it is not too difficult getting a ride out there, either from the parking lot right before the ramp or at the red drum tackle shop where most people hit before going over to the beach (buxton). most people are pretty friendly and will accomodate someone needing a ride.

the reds that time of year will more than likely be well off shore with stripers and chopper bluefish (not in real recent years) being a possibilty. you just never know.

happy holidays and good luck!
