the fishing report on the www.reddrumtackle.com board is fairly accurate. i check it daily. this time of the year it may take a day or two to get a report but according to the latest (yesterday 12-10) the stripers are starting to move down toward hatteras with a number of them making it down to hatteras inlet. others speculate that the huge schools have not left the chesapeake and that the season should really begin in the next couple of weeks. i have never been there when they were caught in great numbers, was hoping that this year would prove different. still, i have caught a few nice ones each year.

steve,

you might want to keep an eye out for possible problems with traffic due to the wright brothers celebration. from what i have heard, they are already setting up detours to accomodate the influx of people, especially since Bush is coming. there are very few roads, so make your plans accordingly. good luck!

kip,
Thank You very much for that info. The trip is already 9hrs, and don't want any real bad delays, getting down there. The place I am staying supplies bicycles. May have to use a bike to get around Hwy 12???

your correct....form Kitty Hawk to Buxton is about 1 hour to 1.5 hour.

The Wright Brothers stuff is supposed to wrap up like 12/17 or 18....things should be back to normal on the islands by then.

B.

BTW- you don't have to go to Buxton to catch fish....

B.Meyers,
Thanks for the info. Going to use I-95S to I-64E through Manteo to avoid the crowds. Looking forward to a great time. Hope the Fish are cooperative. I have never been down to Hatteras before, and look forward to it. Fishing Up North has died to the point that I am now targeting Herring.

Got back from Kitty Hawk yesterday after fishing Coquino (?) Beach Friday and Saturday. Winds were strong, and temps combined with winds cold.

Most of the group didn't even get a bite, so we suffered through a two day skunk. One of the group bought in a 33" striper from somewhere south of the inlet, and another fishing coquino (?) landed two nice red drums and a 43", 33plus pound striper, so all was not lost.

Just can't figure it, winds good (nor'east),yet strong and water looked good, but alas, the fishing gods were not on my side.

Drove the beach to the inlet, and saw one other person bring in a nice striper, but from my vantage point, pickins, though when caught nice fish, were hit or miss and seemed more no show at the bait end of the rods.

Oh well, maybe next year.

Its all where you were i guess....we had a nice bite at OI, wasnt wide open, but was a nice steady pick of fish. We found a few on the point....overall everyone in the group had limits with most fishi nthe 20-25 pound range, a few went oup to 30#

As for the traffic, it wasnt that bad, last night I had to take old nags head road outta the seashore, but overall it wasnt nearly as bad as I was expecting.

Hoping to go back this upcoming weekend.
