Joe, New Bern is about one hour from the Emerald Island area and Harkers Island area. Great fishing for trout, Spanish, fat alberts, and all sorts of bottomfish. To get to the "true" outer banks at Nags Head and Hatteras and the larger fish there, New Bern is a 3-4 hour drive away.

hey mudd!

sorry that i didn't get to see you on sunday. the blues bit all morning (no drum).

for some reason, the barrier islands along the atlantic beach coast has banded together and are calling themselves the SOBX, for southern outer banks. beautiful beaches, lushious water, and as Mudd indicated a good variety of small bottom fish. tarpon in the sounds and off the beach in the summertime. as mudd also said, newbern is about an hour away and WOULD be commutable. if you are looking to move there, shoot me a PM and i'll give you some more information as we have a house there and have some contacts that would be benefitial.

Thanks all -
We may be getting a winter place there in the near future. The idea of tarpon from the beach sounds exciting!

Also to add to Mudd,Oriental is about 20 min or so away, tarpon, drum, and specks..Specks are there all winter, from what I've heard from friends a lot more than in Hatteras..All you need in the summer and early fall there is a small boat and you're set good fishing all down the Nuese River.. As for Hatteras,I go to the tarpon tourney every July to Oriental,it's a 4 and a half to 5 hr drive from Frisco,NC..
