I am getting a lot of confusing directions on best route from DC to Hatteras. The problem is in the Norfolk/Va Beach area. If I am travelling East on 64, exactly what exit do I take to connect with 168 South toward Nags Head. Different directions I find say exit 290, exit 291 B, exit 263, and exit 264. Any advice would be much appreciated.

As I check the maps, it looks like the question is: going south is it better to (1) take I 64 E until it hits 168 S OR take I 64 E until you hit 464 S then get off at 168 S?

John, you're confusing me now, and I've been heading that way for thirty years

What is 291b? Have to admit, through the years, have taken many different routes.....recently I've been going this way... (I leave out of Richmond)...I choose 664 or 64 depending on traffic conditions, to 168....

PK, check this site...

Comments above - and the map- are helpful.
wizard: 291B is not a route number. It is the exit number on 64E that delivers you onto the Chesapeake Expressway.
As the map shows, once you are travelling on 64E toward 168S, it about the same distance to go either (1) 64E east then south to 168S OR (2) 64E to 664S to 64E again to 168S. I get the impression that choice (2) is better when traffic in the area is heavy. My inclination is to do choice (1) because I will be going through there about 10PM when traffic is light and that route is much simpler with less chance for me to miss a turn.
Thanks again for all the advice. I would welcome further comments or suggestions from anyone.

Yea, I knew that

Anyway, it's a pretty easy trip, just keep your eyes open. I think "all" roads lead to the OBX anyway
