I am headed to Hatteras in mid-November for a week, staying in Avon and fishing surf all over. I would welcome suggestions as to best places to unwind in evening with good food and drink. I loved the Breakwater in Hatteras Village last year but Isabel made it unavailable this year. Thanks.

dunno about dinner places... we either cook on the sand or brown-bag it from Subway. BREAKFAST, however, should be from the Orange Blossom Bakery in Buxton.

Go back in the OBX archives to 4/03 and find the topic "other things to do". Some good info there relative to what you're now asking.
This link may take you there - web page

Sorry, Dude, but I gotta thumbs down the Froggy Dog......never liked it much.
As was said, the Breakwater is my choice, but obviously, tis out of the question for awhile. The Mad Crabber isn't too bad, not great, but okay. Some of the better places we liked aren't there anymore ....I think it was Emily's in Rodanthe or Salvo, but that's long gone. The Barefoot Pub at the Avon Pier was good, but they sold out to Dirty Dick's which I avoid. There was also a place, I think it was the Salt Marsh or something like that in the Plaza where the ABC store is in Buxton, and was very good, if a tad expensive and, um, a bit "uppity" (for Hatteras, at least... ), but again, that is gone and changed to something else, not sure what.Austin Creek (?) in Hatteras is pretty good, but expensive, and with the breach, that's out of the question as well..... The Pilot House used to be good year's ago, and has a nice view, but we stopped there this year, looked at the menu, weren't too impressed, and found it a bit pricey for what they offered. For some reason, in the 15+ years we've been going to Avon, we never ate a the Tides or the Quarterdeck, so can't comment on them. One small place that I like is the Pickled Steamer right near the Food Lion. They have some interesting stuff, and make some awesome wraps. They have everything from seafood to burgers to sandwiches and wraps. One word of warning......be CAUTIOUS with the Endorphin Chicken wrap, unless you like blowing off the top of your head with halbenaro sauce. I learned the hard way, and I LIKE hot stuff. Now I just get the standard chicken wrap and ask for just a tad of the Endorphin Sauce, and it makes me sweat, but keeps me happy. The other thing, the place is run by a couple of, shall we say somewhat "flakey" young ladies, who have a love for the beach, so their hours are a bit unpredictable, to say the least. Toppers Pizza in the same plaza isn't too bad. Haven't been to the "Fish House" in Buxton since it was Billy's Fish House....was very casual and unique back then, but the food was good. Don't know about now, though. The Dolphin's Den is supposed to be pretty good, but like the Tides and the Quarterdeck, for some reason, we've never eaten there. There is also the Blue Parrot, which used to be in the big hotel in Avon, but now is at the Nroth edge of Avon on the Soundside....we ate there once when it was still in the Hotel, and it was pretty good. The chef there is supposed to be a 4 or 5 star chef. Best bet is to catch some fish, and/or stop by Risky Business Seafood in Buxton and buy some more and/or fresh shrimp, softshells, scallops, etc.....go back to the cottage and cook up your own delicious seafood fest.... .

We usually stay "somewhere" between Rodanthe and Frisco, if we decide to Hang" out somewhere, It's usually Howard's Pub on Ocracoke. Don't know how that works anymore since Izzy, like you said, after 30 years of going down, never know if your favorite place will be there, washed out, or sold out ![]() [ 10-23-2003, 03:13 PM: Message edited by: wizardude ]

Ocracoke is currently unaccessable from hatteras island due to the breach. Pickled steamer and buxton munch company for wraps/lunch are both excellent. I only go south to fish so can't comment on dinner places.

Many good suggestions.
Places to get fresh seafood: other than Risky Business which seems always closed when I visited them, there is a surprisingly good seafood store located in the Texaco gas station at Avon. (what! fresh seafood in a gas station?). Top quality fresh tuna, swordfish,..etc caught daily by local fisherman. We have been there for many years and were never disappointed. Another surprising place is the supermarket at Avon (Foodlion?) which sometimes have very fresh seafood caught locally with good price. It is not always there, and when arrive not in great quantities so it sells out quickly. |

Piney - Forgot about the Down Under. We went there once when it was still on the Ocean side, and yep, it was pretty good. They have since moved to a building over on the Soundside.
Nano - that is Stoney's Seafood at the Texaco Station. They are good, but I find them a bit more expensive than Risky Business. Risky Business in Buxton is open from 10-6 everyday except Sunday, Sunday, it's 1-6 (at least those are the hours when we are there in late June). There is also another seafood market near Sun Reality by the Food Lion. They have only been open for two years, and again, I find them more pricey than Risky Business. Dude - the best party spot WAS the Kinnakeet Tavern...... , which alas, has also been gone for sometime now. Had some "memorable" times in there (or maybe that's "im-memorable:.... ). It is now the Mad Crabber, which, after the dinner crowd is gone, can still get pretty party-ish....

Quarterdeck isn't to be open until next yr cause of "isab@tch"..
Dolphin Den ain't too bad,at least the burgers, never eaten a full course meal.. As far as burgers,Top Dog in Salvo is THE BEST! Breakwallet Man I wish the :barf: icon still worked.. Austin Creek Grill, over rated and the prices?? Pops,Toppers Pizza,Lissa's Pizza, and the Fish House are all good.. My sister came down to visit this summer and said the Pilot House was good also.. The spots in Hat could be reached soon.. I went to the "new inlet" today and it was no longer a breech or inlet,it's closed up!! I am not real sure what is going to happen with regaurd to Ocock, the road on north end was totaled. They have been having problems with transporting the asphalt to pave it.. ![]() [ 11-02-2003, 11:34 PM: Message edited by: Drumdum ] |

I have to agree with Steve from Mass. Get some of that great seafood and go back to the cottage and eat with a view. The best meal I ever had in Hatteras was when my cousin in law Mike from Harvey Cedars Shellfish came and visited our cottage. We took a trip to the guy in Hatteras Village who sells his own catch and some of the boats. Grilled Tuna steaks, steamed little necks in garlic butter over Italian bread. then as the garlic bread was in the broiler, a pod of whales not dolphins are breaching off the first bar. You can't see that in a restaurant even at Austin Creek. Stay away from the restaurants, buy more wine, and cook in that cottage that has a view you wish you had at home. One more thing go with friends and other people you love, thats what its all about the food is secondary.
Have a great trip!!! Shag
