Just wondering, how are thing making out with that new inlet that formed south of Frisco? Did the Army Corps fill it in yet? After a day or two you don't hear anything on the news these days. Thanks...

Hi Bido

I was there Friday. The breach was still open then.
It was rippin too!
There were surveyors setting up what looked like GPS recievers on the road on both sides and there was some instrumentation (looked like current speed metering devices) being placed in the center of the breach. Th place was crawling with Park Service personnel and some looked to be Army Corps Engineers.

There were a lot of fishermen working the ocean side of the breach on the outgoing water. The current was really moving and the water looks really fishy. The guys who were netting live bait were catching some flounder and small blues.

Digger...How have you been? Did you happen to hear of any completion dates when road construction will be complete in Hatteras? I heard rumors of a mid-December completion. By the way...The cooler rack is complete and I was able to fit a 94qt cooler in it which is great for my setup. I will send pics...Thanks again.

From an OBX site:

Quote:
I have been told that the Isabel Inlet between Hatteras and frisco was closed today 10-28-03. There is still a lot of work to be done but no water is now flowing between the sound and ocean between Hatteras and Frisco. Possibly the road will be open again by Thanksgiving. That will be a great event to celebrate.

AI, just noticed your username

My signature line has "nothing" to do with you (I've been using it a long time), but it is sort of funny I posted after you

Good to hear that they are moving quickly. those folks in Hatteras are sure in a bad way from the storm.
Here in Jersey, They would have done a 2.6 million dollar Environmental Impact Statement followed by 3 months of hearings and there would have been numerous lawsuits and injunctions against the project. They would end up digging a tunnel and the toll would be $10.00 each way! 26 new no-show jobs would be created and some politician would take lots of money from the concrete and constructions special interest groups to push the project through. It would be completed in 2007

AI-- sent a PM

They've already filed two of the three breaches.. The big one still remains, and is halfway filed. They said in a couple of weeks the filing should be completed and work on the road can begin..

Cool

So, based on the road damage in northern Ocracoke, the only ferry service is between OC Island and the mainland; you can't get to Hat using the OC ferry and come in from the south?

Had to go look in my history for this link, this article was published on Thursday the 6th, it says the breach was closed "on Saturday night" so I'll presume that was Nov 1st?

N.C. Island Rebuilding After Isabel

Be sure to click on the picture at the beginning of the article; it takes you to a slideshow with other pics of the pumping operation.

Cool

I thought they'd put a bridge in there . . . never would have guessed they'd move the beach back in. That's $6.5+ million until the next one.
