i received permission from the boss to get a new surf rod. i posted on the main page, but the request for information was ignored. so here goes, i am looking at something to throw plugs and metal in the 2 to 4oz range. i have the allstar/breakaway 1265 and the 11'9", but i was looking at something a little different. i was looking at the purglas 350-2 and the zziplex powertek bass and wanted some information on either or both of these rods. your feedback would be greatly appreciated. also these would be set up for conventional versus spinning configurations. thanks.

350-2 is dead on perfect at 4.. I know folks rave about how far it will cast 2 but for me, it doesn't feel right.. i've casted up to 7 and bait with mine.. while it was somewhat of a lob, it got it out there pretty good.. the rod loads MUCH different than the breakaways and has a very through action... due to that, i can't feel the lighter weights as it loads.. it's a very nice rod, lightweight, casts well and fights a fish better than anything i've used, but for me, it doesn't feel right for my casting style... maybe the 300 or 350-1 would be better if you are really only looking for up to 4 oz...
if you like the 1265 and the 11'9, i'd say a 1266 breakaway would be very hard to beat for what you are looking at.. one more thing, if what you are looking for is just pure all out distance, the zziplex powertex bass, conoflex gambit or other 12'+ sticks are impossible to beat.. However, think seriously about how you will like working a 2 oz tin or plug with a 12 foot rod... i found that while the rods are super light, it just didnt' feel right. hope this helps some..

Kip....throwing a 12' rod all night....I don't think you'll like it.
Lami has a good rod out...and I for the life of me can't think of the number....120 L or something like that. Very nice stick...and of course is a spinner. Throwing those 2 ounce plugs into the night in a stiff NE wind...I wouldn't want a conventional for that.. $260 or so, so it won't blow the bank. B. Myers |

Rainshadow/Batson #1088 at 8'10" is ideal for those needs. I've got the # 1087 and its perfect for stripers, pups and such with 1 to 2.5 oz.
I've got the St Croix Ben Doer that is rated to 1.5 oz, but it is my 2 to 4 oz rod. Light and easy to cast all nite long. If I did not have it , I would definitly have the # 1088. I've got a builder here that does excellent work and is very reasonable. If you want his info let me know.
