Thinking about renting a house in early Sep. on HI for a family vacation. It'll be a laid back affair so after dinner I'd like to be able to just stroll out the door and over the dunes to chunk a few fish heads for the grin fish.
The east beaches obviously offer more places to stay. But do the south beaches offer better shark fishing? [ 07-22-2003, 02:24 PM: Message edited by: Plug ]

Thats a good question. In my opinion, you will have better fishing on the east-facing beaches at Salvo or Avon. But I don't really have the evidence to back it up. Maybe DrumDum will answer.

don't know about the sharkies, but i've had one of those type trips in september probably 5 or 6 times.. always stay from rodanthe to avon... have caught fish each time. from nice puppy drum to a 30 inch cobia last sept, right in front of the house...
In general, the houses within about 1/2 miles south of the rodanthe pier provide some pretty good holes...

That's where camp hatteras is, and there are a couple of nice holes. Noted a running sandbar out about 100 yards, with a few holes in it just at the north end of the campground. Also big colonies of sand fleas at the pier base. S

Look for a nonstructured flat boring beach and throw fresh fish heads-they should be everywhere. I like the southern part of R38 almost to the sign for sharking but that sand sure is nasty. If blacktips are around they will hit surface plugs and I'm guessing you got some of those.

I remember last yr,took my cousin to the False Point to catch 2lb plus bluefish on stingsilvers,he had never caught one before.. We watched spinner sharks at least 6fters skying through the bluefish on the first bar,it was a sight to behold!
