I'll be staying in Nags Head from the 19th tillthe 27th and was wondering if I should fish the surf or the bay and artificials or bait. Id really prefer some light spinning tossing light lures but if that isnt a good idea Ive been known to stoop as low as Squidlips to find fish, even freshwater would be of some interest,in fact theres a small lake on a golf course not far from where I'll be, maybe a midnight stroll over there with a Black Jitterbug would be in order. Any help or suggestions are appreciated, not looking for spots just whats around and worth fishing for.

I got back on friday. Blues and spanish macks from the durf to a few ounces...actualy blues to two pounds by me. Beaches really iffy. Suggest a trip on teh Miss Haterras out of Hatteras island. 75 bucks, lot's of fish, only goes out to the gulf stream on W/F/Sun. Sunday is the best day as the boat is usually quieter. Got a 6 pound strawberry grouper, 2 sea bass to four pounds, a vermillion snapper, and a bunch of trigger. Good eats for sure. Well worth the trip. Saw a logger head turtle, sea birds too. Very cool! Call now for a reservation, as they fill up. If no spots, ask for reserve seating as I had to do this and got on with no problem. S

Depends on the weather, mainly. Right now it's all the croakers you can ever want to catch, and I suppose there are some biters out there as well. If things clear up, take your light gear out the Cape Point and sling metal for spanish macks and bluefish. Pray for wind out of the SE or E - anything but W / SW now.

My whole two weeks there were 20-30 knots out of the SW. Even had a substantial water spout that went across pea island refuge. S

I'll be in Rodanthe the same week. This is my third year vacationing there. Great for the family and the beach, not so great for fishing. The first year I did a lot of surf fishing without much luck, mostly croaker. Last year I did an off shore charter, that sucked. We trolled for 6 hours and lucked into 1 wahoo. Some of the other boats did OK but since we didn't have a 6 man party we had to go on whatever boat they assigned us. This year I'm going to try a light tackle charter out of Oregon Inlet, hopefully that will be better.
Good luck and let us know how you made out. |
