I will be moving down to N.C. in about three months to the Hampstead area. Can anyone give me a fishing schedule of what kind of fish are there at any given time of the year? I will be mostly surf fishing, preferably with artificials.Any input would be appreciated,Thanks.

I believe hamstead is in the wilmington area. I lived in wilmington for 3 months before moving to the obx - from long island originally - and hated it from a fishing standpoint. The only real beach access is in wrightsville beach. Mostly small stuff like speckled trout and redfish (puppy drum) in the surf. The ocean stripers don't make it down that far south in any numbers in the winter. The good news is that you can take a ferry to ocracoke in the spring and fish chunks for large (25-50+ lb) red drum. I believe the obx is about a 5 hr drive - plan on a few trips for stripers between mid november and december.

The Wilmington area has excellent fishing for Puppy Drum, Trout, and Flounder. The problem is that most of it is boat fishing. A large boat isn't needed because its all inshore.

Two other unexplored inshore fisheries in the area are humongeous (60-110 lbs) Black Drum and Summer Tarpon (70-150 lbs) from the Cape Fear River. They are there, there are a few who fish for them, but the techniques and knowledge are not well known.
