I have a buddy who guides inshore out of NC on the coast. I cancelled a trip to Charleston last year, but before going he gave me some names(I will have to find them again) of some inshore guides there. That is really the best way to find out how "they fish there". 1/2 days are normally around $250.00 and what you will learn is incredible. I fish from my yak and have gone to "strange lands" and always do the above. It puts you well ahead in the learning curve. I too, was from the coastlines of the north, but my fishing is all done now here in NC.
Do a search of fishing guides inshore down there and you will find someone. |

My family and I have been fishing Charleston (Sulivan's Island and Chas. Harbor)for years. I would love to give you the low-down. Most fishing down here is done off of a boat. Bait is the hardest thing to come by from the surf perspective. If you get bait, usually its by going out and cast netting for it. Seabrook is a great place to live. There are lots of little nooks and crannies to fish in. You are going to have to get used to pluff mud (silt from the rivers). The stuff is everywhere and makes wading a major pain...This is starting to go on and on so if you want to know more, email me.

Brian,
I made to opposite move 9 years ago. I am originally from Columbia SC and have fished extensively out of the southern coast - Fripp Island to be exact. Some out of Charleston, but usually off shore there. I continue to make trips to SC every fall to fish the surf. I discovered that there is quite a difference between the two areas - you sure won't catch many stripers in the surf in SC (none!) but the channel bass are really making a strong comeback! Last few years I have caught many in the surf using the same tackle and techniques you would use for stripers in the surf. You really need to experience the creek fishing around Charleston and if you are good with a cast net, learn the shrimp baiting techniques that are still allowed in SC. Fantastic fun and tasty critters. Good luck in God's country, and by the way, to blend in you will need to know that the plural of yall is all yall.

My last name is Charleston. On a trip to Charleston in '98 I was paying for my meal with my credit card. The waitress noticed my name and showed the owner. He came over and handed me a torn up check..
I met the chef who is from Boston. I was born in the greater Boston area. He gave me a script for a free meal the next night. Charleston is a great place ![]() |

Brian,
Best of luck to you down there. Thanks for all the advice about bucktailing. I haven't fished much this season but hope to see you later this season on a certain point, with a fresh Northwest and outgoing tide. Stay well, Pete (Shag)

Fishing report for Charleston, SC. - 11/28/03
17 Drum boated from 14 to 18 inches. Bait of choice(for the drum) finger mullet. Mud minnows produced as well. DOA rootbeer shrimp also produced. No Menhaden and mullet is scarce. Deep holes provide finger mullet. A lot of 20 to 25 inch drum seen but not hungry. Water was very clear for Charleston. Could see at least 3.5 feet deep. Reports of trout as well. None seen this trip. -------------------- All Drum, All The Time. |
