Planning a Christmas in Hatteras... What fish are catchable at the lighthouse point in December? Want stripers, blues -- what are the chances? Tackle shops open full time? Bait available or plan ahead?

the Drum should be open...as well as Frisco Rod and Gun. Bass and blues can be from Kitty Hawk to Buxton...all depending on wind and water temps.
Bunker, can be found...again, all depending if the boats can get out to net it. It'll be cold...especially w/ a NW wind, but can be some great fishing then! B. |

Thanks for the info. Weather's no problem -- got the cold weather gear and the attitude. A big fish'll get the blood pumping...
PS to Pete and New Jersey who fished with me at the point during Easter: got my striper on Mother's Day. |

one more thing the boats don't fish for bait for a day or two around Christmas. So try to find enough bait for a couple days. If you are coming the day after Christmas I'd bring bait or stop at every shop that's open.

Bunker has been in short supply for the past few weeks... It seems that one of the netters got a pink slip from the Man Upstairs, and another guy put his boat down in the inlet. I think there is one guy left, and he's servicing all the shops from Avon to Hatteras. Bottom line: if you find good baits on your way south, buy 'em, salt 'em, treasure 'em.
