that should be the new NC state record....113# I do believe.
I'm guessing the bridge in the background is Manns Harbor or either the one there 158 outside of Kitty Hawk. Twas a boat fish.... B. |

I'm pretty sure Brian's right though. He caught the fish on a jig sightcasting from a boat with a spinning rod.. The fish jumped about 150yards away from the boat,Lewis said he still had NO IDEA the fish was that big,so he put the rod in the holder with the fish on it so he could gaff his bud's 78lber that he was about to land.. Then,he went back to fighting and landing his fish...He told me they were in a "nest of pigs" they caught and released 3 others, pulled hooks on two,ALL,over 70lb!!!!!!! He told me SWS was doing an article....He's an excellent fisherman, and he has always had a "horseshoe" in his back pocket.. ![]() |

Forcasting that these cobes will still be around is like forcasting the weather.. The last cobe I caught last yr was June 28.. I have caught fish as late as July 15,have heard of others in late July, still others caught while "livelining" kings on the "badbottom"in Oct up to 70plus lbs... BUT,as I said, look at the weather forcast,it's about as accurate..... ![]() |

a few more weeks for the big push of fish from the beach. The boats will still pick at them through out the summer....around the piers and various wrecks.

Holy smoke!
What a beast! Congrats Lewis After reading the story, there's something of note in there should anyone ever hook a potential world record - don't put the rod in a holder, lean it on the gunnel or allow anyone in the boat to touch any portion of the rod, reel or line. Any of those things will make the critter ineligible for IGFA records. Just so yah know...Cobia that size are certainly nearing world record size, aren't they? State records don't have the same requirements as the IGFA, but they do vary from state to state. Again, just so yah know - next time you stick that immooovable side of beef, start considering that it might be an IGFA world record and hang onto the stick TimS

Tim S, Lewis understands about the IGFA requirements,yr ago I think he owned a record in the book for a fish, but it's been a while.. He told me he REALLY DIDN'T realalize the size of the fish, until the "bitter end".. And YES,I think you are right,we could be do for a new world record, here or in the Cheasapeake. Sighted one last yr on top while I was anchored that looked bigger than Lewis's,couldn't drop anchor bouy off before I had lost sight of him..
Thanks for editing my photo, that looks better than the original I scaned.. |
