I know guys occasionally get them from the piers on Bucktails, but you beach guys, Do you ever go out plugging for them. They seem like agressive predators, but I never really heard much about guys blind casting poppers, metal, or other plugs for them.
Thanks, Jim |

They are kinda like large drum in that you gotta be in the right place a the right time to get em on a plug.
We always have a plug rigged up just in case we see one cruising or we see a ray or turtle swimming by. They love to follow the rays and turtles so it always pays to throw at them even if you dont see the cobe. It happens much more often from a boat and you would think it would happen more from the surf. I have heard of it happening a couple times, from the beach, and even saw a cobe come up under a pencil popper one day and follow it for about ten yards then disappear. The guy never knew it was under his popper. What clued him in was the mass stamped of five of use grabbing our pluggin rods and castin beside him It doesn't happen often but it pays to have a rod by and ready cause they can appear out of nowhere and right in the first breaker on some occasions. If you are bored and feel like blind casting for hours it could pay off. Wormy |

what's so difficult is to find a rod that can throw a plug well but yet has the @ss to handle a cobia....especially if it gets out in the current off the tip of Cape Point.
IMHO a heaver doesn't throw top water plug well, and a sting silver (6 0z) rides too low in the water column to be effective. I know this guy that just got a boat...when he takes me out, maybe we can get one on the long rod... BTW- Meat...if you read this, shoot me a e-mail. Ain't talke to you in FOREVER!! B. |

I know you guys have real clear water down there at times, is that part of the reason plugging isn't the best way. Don't know how the eyesight of a cobia is.
What about a ranger type lure if distance in the issue? Big Danny's can launch too. Sorry if the questions are a bother. Just curious about a fish we don't get too much around here. Jim |

Finally a topic that I can talk about with a little knowledge on. Ask Away!
The clear water could be a major factor in it. The cobes hate the dirty water and the best days are when it is slick as glass and gin clear. Yeah, a Roberts plug or a Danny just may do it. I would lean towards the Danny more though. I know they love eels so if you could get a rigged rubba or the real deal near one you got the best chance. Cobes are not know for great eye sight, so you need to be fairly accurate with your presentation. They are funny though sometimes they will hit anything that gets near em and the next they wont even turn on anything. Closest I ever came was I threw a plug (big rubba) behind one and he turned around on a dime and I was waiting for the hit, Nothing. Maybe he got close enough to get a good look at it??? I got a couple of secret weapons lined up for this year. I will share one I got a LARGE Hab's Needle and I took half of a rubba eel tail and put it on the single tail hook. Looks sweet may swim like **** but we will see. It is heavy enough to cast well and they love some eels. We will see. I wonder if anyone has got a cobe on a Hab's yet?? I am off to Hatteras in the mornin till late Sun night. Hopefully get a shot at one on the beach and maybe outa da boat on Sunday, though the wind aint lookin too good for Sunday. I will report if anything happens Wormy |

You hear abtou a few at night, but not much fishing goes on for them at night. Especially when the biters are real thick.
The toruble with being on the beach is finding a place to throw a lure or jig. There are so many lines out there that you cant hardly find a spot to throw. I am looking forward to cobia season.......alittle vodka, alittle cran berry, its all good. ![]()

I hit the fish one time and stuck him....the leader was over his back the entire time he was in the slough. Once in the wash, I helped drag him up.
Knowing you and your temper, I won't about to stick your fish with the leader in the way. Besides, it practically beached itself....you needed someone to stick that little fish for you?? Meat, we hear you go to bed at 8 now and don't wake up till noon. So we didn't call. You ain't missed anything...except the BS sessions. B. |
