My very first post over here in the OBX forum...Cool.

Anyway, I'm taking da' wife and my 2 year old to OBX for a week's vacation from 6/7 to 6/14. My Mom and Dad are tagging along as well. This will be my third visit to OBX, none of which has been for fishing. Yeah, I know...

The focus of this trip is family time, but with all that water around, and Dad and I being long-time fishermen, I was wondering about what opportunities there would be for he and I to spend a morning or afteroon, or day. We won't be able to go heavy on gear...a surf rod or two each, max. We're staying in Nags Head.

Can anyone make any suggestions? Dad's not real big on "heavy effort" fishing, so baitfishing from the beach would be a good thing. Advice? What could we expect?

We'll have a 4x4 along, but it won't be my beach vehicle...so, oversand driving is not likely.

Appreciate any help you all can provide. Thanks!

Now that I've read a few of the other posts, I see that my post is somewhat redundant, so my apologies. But I welcome further comments. Any particular tackle shops that are "not to be missed"?

As I said, we're staying in Nags Head, right on the beach. A grand opportunity to exit the hotel room and stroll over the dunes to water's edge.

6/7- 6/14...AWESOME time to go!!!

Water temps are still in the low 60's, which means alot of warming up needs to happen in the next few weeks for the cobia to begin to show.

Cobia should be good and thick by then...in the past few years that's been the top weekends....but they're mostly off Cape Point from the beach or boats.

Some of the piers may have a few off the end up Nags Head way.

You can also get some spanish off the beach or piers early in the morning and late evening. From the beach throw stingsilvers in the "color of the day"...or off the pier, use the jerk jiggers (gotcha plugs). Any tackle store there will know what your talking about...and should recommend the hot color.

Big drum will probably still be around, however, a little more scattered and mainly at night, but again, it's a Cape Point thing. Pups will be in the sloughs along with sea mullet (whiting), small blues and possible some croaker and grey trout.

You'll have a good time and if you can find time some oppurtunity for some big fish. If it's your 3rd trip...you owe it to yourself to try for some species that make that OBX so famous.

It'll make you forget all about them sissy stripers... lol

So, it sounds like if we bring a sturdy bait rod and accompanying gear, and maybe another plugging rod with an assortment, and make a little effort, we're definitely not fishing in the bathtub. Since we're staying in Nags Head, I don't foresee Dad and I driving off to the Point on any given day for hardcore stuff. I'll have to tag along with JohnM one of these days to do the hardcore thing...

If I know that I can get up at dawn, head over the dunes to the water, and throw some metal or poppers or anything, and have a shot at something, I'm cool.

If we sling some bait, what are we talkin' here? Anything special I should know? And most importantly, what about waders? I prefer to wear them, even when the water's kinda warm, but slingin' them along for a single use is an investment. I'll have to think that one over...

I should just commit to bringing my truck and go for it! Sigh...

slinging bait on Hatteras usually involves 8 ozs and a piece of bunker about the size of a silver dollar..... fish close...fish far....hopefully they'll be somewhere in between.

Cobia fishing off the pier is another ball game all together, with anchor rods, etc.....sounds like you don't have room for all of that.

Typically, the dates you mention, you won't need waders....water will be warm enough to swim in so they will take up space you don't have. Leave'm at home...

Good luck!!

Darryl,

I'll be down the same week. Staying in Buxton. It will be me, my fiance, and anothe couple who don;t fish (ie, I'm the lone fisherperson of the group). Maybe we could break off for a litte serious fishing. Shoot me an e-mail (e-mail is below).
