Have never fished there before.
What's biting this time of year in the surf?
What are good spots? (I have truck for the beach).
Baits or plugs?
Do I really need a heaver for bait and sinkers? (I now have up to 6oz sinkerplus a little covered.)
What bait and tackle shops are a must?
Where do you like to eat and drink? How about to grab some sandwiches to take to the beach?
thanks much.

PK I will be there this weekend, next weekend, the following

Whats biting? Wel its transisiton time at hatteras now. Big drum are still around, puppy drum are around. Speckled trout are showing. The stripers are begning to show up as well. Small fish are around too, mullet, croakers etc (I am not too up on the little fishes)

How to catch em......well bait is the most popular way down there. You can get pups on jigs, tins lures. Specks on lures and jigs. big drum on bait. stripers on bait, metal and lures.

As for throwing 6 ounces in some places that will be ok. PLaces like the point, if you dont have a heaver and throw 8 forget it. Even on open beaches there can be allot of current, being able to thorw 8 or even 10 is a must if oyur a regular down there.

IF oyu wanan hook up or at least exchange info when your down PM me and I will give ya my cell number.

As for eating and drinking it depends on where oyu stay. I like my mobile chateau, tunrs out good meals right ar the waters edge

Hey PK,

I just spent two weeks down in Avon and I could only say if you have a castnet bring it with you. If the fishing is slow you'll need to catch your own bait. I only found fresh bait once in the two weeks I was down and no one was catching anything with week old bait. Otherwise a light rod for catching snappers was the ticket when I couldn't find mullet.

There was too much wind and current for anything lighter than 4 oz most of the time I was down. And the snappers took care of anything rubber I was throwing so bait and heavy lead was really the best option.

Good luck,
Rui

Hey John,

I managed some weakies, fluke and countless 8" snappers. No specks but from what I heard they are still in deeper water, boat guys were doing well.

I also got one small black drum but missed the bite by about an hour on the north side of the point. I was fishing the south side of course. But other than it being my 1st it was pretty uneventful.

I drove up to OI three nights to find it closed even at dead low. The beach is so flat that the dunes are starting to get eaten away right at the entrance.

I did see two large drum (46" and 48") come up on the point but all I could manage was getting caught up in the snags. Lost at least one rig in each of the three snags and I think I found a new one that no one knew was there . Got lots of practice tieing biminis that day. I only fished the point that day since the action seemed further north. The birds/fish never came in over the bar. Those two were the only ones hooked for about 15 guys fishing.

On the good side I fished a full two weeks without a single break off. I was quite impressed . I think I'm getting the hang of the heaver and re-learning how to fish mono.

I got two more days that I have to take before Jan. I may head down one more weekend probably 2nd or 3rd week in Dec.
