I just bought a vcr tape titled "Bluefish Blitz". It was filmed just south of the Oregon Inlet and shows 10-15# bluefish right off the suds, maybe in 8 inches of water chasing menhadden.
The water did not look rough, meaning, the waves were a lot smaller than those I am accustomed to in Delaware. Maybe 1 foot swells at the most. Are big bluefish common near the inlet? Was this a one toime event? And id the wave action always the way I depicted? |

common, not really, but they do happen from time to time. it seems to be a cyclical occurence combined with the availibility of bait and water temps. many of the "chopper" bluefish stay off shore for much of the winter where they are a prime food source for the bluefin tuna. there are many factors that contribute to a blitz of large bluefish and sometimes they all come together at just the right time.

OH,BUT,Kip,at one time it was common, when I first started fishn Hat in 75 dem rascals were everywhere!! We used to curse em when we were trying to catch drummies. I have seen em off the planks so thick they looked like blue carpet in the water, maybe an inch or two apart..
The first blitz I ever witnessed was at Hat Inlet, man, that was WAAAAAAAAY BAAAAAAAAAAACK,I had bass tackle......... As you say, many of those fish are offshore now, wrecks especially, they'll cover a bottom machine!! Hope they stay there,I love catchen specks don't you???? ![]() |

DD,
perhaps i should have said "not common anymore". i remember catching a couple of 15#+ fish several years ago, one on a bottom rig using 10# test, that was really fun. landed and released that one, looked into the waves to see hundreds of these huge fish. cut off the bottom rig and tied on a hopkins. flipped it out there and wham! it was a terrific 10 minutes of jumping fun. can't wait to get over this pneumonia so that i can come down to the OBX again and catch a few specks, stripers, and maybe a drum or two, although i think that i have probably missed them this fall. look forward to seeing you on the beach. |

Kip, that bridge will cut about 20 min off your time. Depending on the time of day. It sure is nice. Now, if ole Marc will get the 4 lane finished before he is kicked out.
