Just got back from an 8 day trip to the Cape Lookout area. Our group scored a quite a few drum with most being small (15-22"). There were several in the 28" range and one big 'un (42 inches). Most of these fish were in shallow cuts and pockets close to the beach, although a few were caught on longer casts.

Most were caught on chunk bait or whole finger mullet with a few taken on plastic swimbaits. One of the guys even landed a 28 incher on a flyrod in the surf (using an intermediate line and a deceiver) during a hot bite. I envy you guys out there in NC!
