I'll be heading down to Rodanthe in the next couple of weeks. I went last summer and the family and I had a great time.

I was curious if using live bait was common this time of year when surf fishing? I'm usually pluggin' when I fish Jersey with the occasional clam sogging but since I've got a whole week I thought I might be able to locate some live bait. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

J.T.

there might be some eels , can't remember who has them this time of year .
best bet for live bait will probally be a cast net
most use cut bait down there , & fresh bait usually isn't any problem ..

JT,live bait will work from the surf, but you would probably have to use a kite or float it out a little.. If you want to use live bait and are near Rodanthe, try the pier! There are possibilities out there (when using a pinrig)kings, jackcrevalle, cobia,or even a tarpon! If you want to plug fish go early in the morning and try for spainish with a a stingsilver or maybe a gotcha plug if you are on the planks.. If you like specks and puppy drum try the soundside with a bucktail and a trace of mullet on the back of it or a jig with a fin-s or grub.. Several tackle shops in that area, can steer ya right also..

I've had luck at night catchin the little croaker..about palm sized, then transferring them over to the heaver and dropping them in a slew to "swim" around in.

Had some good run off's , from sharks more than likely, and beached a few small sharks. Croakers were so plentiful, when your bait was stole, just drop a bottom rig into the same slew and get you a new bait. Sorta like your own great big live well.

For daytiime fishing, as DD said, end of the piers is your best bet.

Good luck,
B.

Thanks for the info. When I went last year I stayed on the beach most of the time. I did not try the pier or the sound. I'll see how I make out there this year.

Thanks again,

J.T.
