I'm going to be in Avon the first week of June and would like to take a shot at some cobia off the beach. I haven't tried them off the beach before and was looking for some input on bait/lures, rigs, time of day, general structure to look for,...the basics.
Thanks,
Mike

Cool

we were down the first week in june last year . the cobia fishing had just started to get good when we had to leave .
fishfinder rig with chunk of bait or if you can see them try tossing a bucktail at them ; beware they follow big skates (guess you gotta take the good with the bad ) searching for a meal .
hitting the beach this year for the second weekend in june ......i want a cobia!!!!!!

Mike....your best bet would be Cape Point...on the S. beach side.

Spike the rod, using the rig mentioned by Derf. Insure your drag is loose so your stuff don't get jerked in the drink when it goes off.

Sometimes they'll come in under the big rays...most of the time though, they just grab the fresh bait as it sits on bottom.

Last year they were still getting them on the north beach in Avon when I was down....the last week in June...I may have had one on.....or it could have been a ray or a shark....I'll never know, since the lower half of my rig disappeared......but there were confirmed reports of them on the beach in Avon for the whole time I was down....

I was down around the end of May, beginning of June and heard of a few caught at the point. I didn't really give them a try. Spent the days with the girlfriend on the Avon beaches and the nights fishing the point. We may have to spend some more time on south beach during the day this year.

Sounds like the standard drum rig is the ticket and that I should toss a bucktail in the vicinity of any passing skate. Do they favor particular conditions? Do they tend to travel just on the other side of the bar?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike as my compadre B. said south of the point.....mind what he says he is the "Cobia King" Women love him and cobia fear him lol serious he wrecked them last year.

Standard drum rig, bunker as bait also fresh blue fish. The key is water has to be clear......the cruise as close as 20 feet off the beach or can be a long cast......I cant wait to get after them cobes again be ready for spanish too.....2 ounce sting silver is the ticket...they wil eb there at sunrise and later in the day....can you say fish fry???

Fly rod for a cobia...hmmm...now that would be a hoot!!!

I could see it from a boat...off the beach...man you talk about a work out!!!

As John said, clear water is the key. They will often run up into the "washing machine" on the Point. Then you get to "wrassle" them outta all that current...while they are tailwlaking and tearing the water to shreads.

You will end up atleast 50 yds from your truck once you hook one of these guys.. Beware of the spines on the back, so you don't get stuck when you fetch'm from the wash.

Good luck,
B.

John....it's your year man....your all over it.

I have only been able to get away for the Easter Weekend trip. I saw most of the usuals then except you Brina.

But, speaking of Cobias I'm planning a long weekend for Memorial day and then again two weeks later. Gonna get me a legal one of them things this year.

Anybody ever toss eels at them?

Gotta have a fly rod out, because if I don't one is bound to swim right in range. The only encounter I've had with a cobia was in Tampa Bay. We were fishing a flat for redfish and snook. I had just put the fly rod away, when a 30 to 40# cobia swam right up to and then around the boat. The thing was beginning to be fed. We cast off all three of our live baits and the fish swam off laughing at us rookies.
