I have been using these hooks for chunking and eeling for 2 yrs. Never gut hooked a drum and only 2 stripers while using eels. At the beginning of the spring season I ordered a 12 packs from an online shop for 1.99/pack (not SOL). This is much better than the 3.29/3.99 I was paying at the local shops. Until this spring I could use one hook per trip if I didn't lose it while resharpening after each fish landed. With this new batch, 26 large drum landed, 2 lost and 28 hooks used. The point is consistently coming in bent or completely snapped off after a fish. I stopped sharpening them first (oversharpening?) and it is still happening. These hooks are only good for one fish. This never happened to me before. Any ideas? I just ordered another 6 packs from another online shop along w/ a 3lb spool of solar big game. I don't think the quality could have changed that much. Maybe I got a bad batch.

you must have gotten a bad batch. I used to use them all the time and I never had to sharpen them at all. I do scale the bait though not sure if you're doing that. Odd that they are breaking when you catch fish. Do they break on stripers too or only drum, cause you know those drum have mouths like rocks.
go with the mustad Demon Circle in 10/0 (previously 14/0), you will need to sharpen them though as they are kind of dull but they have a very stout point. good luck, gary |

i haven't had a problem with the points in a much as a problem losing fish in the wash. a friend of mine was experienceing the same thing and wondered if the bend of the hook was so, for lack of a better word, round, that the fish when on its side can slip out at the critical point witht he fish in the wash. we looked at the eagle claw new circle hook and the bend seems to be more "squared off" and may prevent the hook sliding out. now i must also admit that we both fish with the barbs pushed down to facilitate releasing the fish quickly.

Kip,
I used some of those Eagle Claw circles last Fall and thought the shape was good, however the points seemed incredibly soft and didn't hold a point very well. JMHO but its either gamis or large Mustads for me. Hatteras on My Mind, Shag |

There are actually 3 different models of the Gami circle hooks in the 8/0 size that all look virtually the same…there is the popular “Octopus” circle hook w/ the traditional bent eye; there is also the same style circle hook w/o the bent eye; and finally there is the “Offshore” circle hook.
The Octopus circle hook w/ the bent eye is made of thin 1X strong wire. I started out with this hook a couple of years ago and quickly found out that it will bend and will not stay that sharp…the straight eye circle hook is made of heavier gauge wire and are X+ strong…if you go w/ the Gami's, this is the hook you want to use. The Offshore circle is very hard to find on the east coast and quite expensive. I have recently found a circle hook that will put the Gami's, Owner's, Mustad's, etc. to shame. Dachii—13/0 “Improved Circle”…these hooks have a slight offset; are made of a medium gauge “forged” wire w/ high carbon content for hardness; come w/ a black nickel finish; have low profile barb; have an extended belly and most importantly are “The World's Sharpest Hooks” as the manufacturer states it… Are they that sharp you asked? Yes! They are so sharp that just looking at them you get stuck … I used them this past weekend at Cape Point…you all know how the “Washing Machine” and a few big Drum will dull your hooks. Well, the hooks were still as sharp afterwards… This was the hook that Wormy was interested in…![]() ![]() ![]() |

Poppy, is that Dachii 13/0 improved circle the same size as a Mustad 13/0?
I recently picked up some of the new Owner Circles in size 10/0. They look a lot like the Gami 8/0 Octi-circles but the wire is a little thicker and the 10/0 size is. I have used the gami Octi-circles for 3 years with no problems, I just wanted something slightly heavier/bigger/thicker. |

I like using the 8/0 Gami's. It seems it doesnt take much effort for the fish to set the hook with the lighter wire. Mustads seem to fat.

I have been using the ones w/ the bent eye. I really think I got a bad batch. I snelled a few from my new packs and landed 2 pups/yearlings and 2 big bluefish on the same hook without it bending or breaking. That is the reason I like them - it doesn't take any effort at all to set the hook on a fish with them. I didn't know Tim sold them here. Thanks for all your help.

If your having point problems try going with the 8/0 4x configuration. I have used these for years and have never had any problems. Ultra sharp and super strong. In addition with there straight eye as opposed to the turned up eye I get all corner of the mouth hook ups. Had several gut hooked fish with the regular Gami Octopus Circles. IMHO give the 4x a try.

down side to the 4x is the $$$$$ I have used them and honestly I dont think they are worth the extra $$$$. the lighter bent eye 8/0 work fine for me, no gut hooks yet.

Caught 8 Drummies, 6 on them Gami's, all corner jaw or lip hooked. 2 Drum and a chopper blue on the new Owner Octocircles in 10/0...corner jaw SOLID hooked, snag monster took that investment away from me. 3 citaters 40,40,41" my first bigguns.
