Looks like I am going to leave tomorrow morning and go down there. I had a couple of questions. Looks like my son might have done me in. He has keys to my Jeep with him in Florida. Supposedly he mailed them but I haven't got them yet. My question without a 4WD are there still places I can get to to fish? Also I have a AWD Aerostar van which has relatively low clearance and is pretty long. What is the sand like down there? Does it get big ruts where the vehicles? drive. Anyone else use an AWD on the beach down there? Thanks

TomR,

If you want to fish for drum, then your options lie between Cape Point and Ocracoke. Walk on access to the point is over a mile. Most likely someone will offer you a ride if they see you humping gear the whole way. You can park at the end of the ramp at the S end of Ocracoke but it is then over a mile walk south to the productive spots. The beach at the end of the ramp might hold some fish. You could probably walk to the N end of Ocracoke along the inlet. It looks like a decent walk but it would put you into good water. The other option is Hatteras inlet which I have never fished. If you are after seamullet, puffers etc. than I would try either Avon pier or Frisco pier. If you are going to be here through Sun, Mon or Tues then give me a call at (252) 255-0043. I probably will not be fishing until Sunday night due to work but if you are around I will gladly pick you up. Good luck and hope for a wind change. It is currently E/NE in Kitty Hawk
